Yorktown Elementary School Stock Market ChampionsPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students know their stocks. A team of students in Kirsten McLeod’s was recently named the top elementary team in the statewide Stock Market Game (SMG) fall 2016 competition. Not only did they outperform all the elementary teams across Virginia, they ranked 16th of the 784 teams representing elementary, middle and high schools in the state. The students and Ms. McLeod will be recognized at the annual SMG Luncheon/Awards program held in Richmond in May. |
ACT-SO HonoreesPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017On Monday, January 16, high school students from around the area were honored at the ACT-SO Breakfast in Williamsburg. Among the honorees were 19 students from each of York County School Division’s five high schools. The annual event honors the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the high academic and cultural achievement of minority students. |
YCSD Science FairPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017The annual York County Science & Engineering Fair took place at the Grafton School Complex on January 12. More than 280 students from across York County secondary schools competed in 17 categories. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University in March. Professional scientists and engineers from throughout the community volunteered their time to evaluate our students’ work. Over $1,000, in cash prizes and special awards, was awarded during the ceremony. |
2016-17 Calendar AdjustmentPosted on: Tuesday, January 17, 2017The York County School Division has made an adjustment to the 2016-17 calendar to address the school closings that took place this month. Monday, January 30, originally scheduled as a teacher workday, will now be a regular school day for all students. January 30 will be the first day of the second semester and will be an A day for secondary students. While the division was closed for three instructional days, only one make-up day will be scheduled. This adjustment was made after reviewing the past several school years, which were affected by inclement weather in late January, February and into March. When considering the options to make up days as we proceed through the school year, the division determined that a proactive approach would be most beneficial to our students. |

Supporting StudentsPosted on: Wednesday, December 21, 2016Special education teachers at Magruder Elementary School found a way to keep students engaged during their winter break. The teachers created winter-themed magnets that they sent home with students in grades 3-5. The snowman magnet includes the websites for all the electronic educational services children have been using in class, and that they can also log into from home. |
Coding at Bethel Manor Elementary SchoolPosted on: Wednesday, December 21, 2016Kelly Prats, the library media specialist at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES), helped incorporate the Hour of Code global movement into school activities in December by teaching students some coding skills during their library time. The students used OZOBOTS as a way to incorporate STEMS in the learning process. Hour of Code is a global initiative designed tointroduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming during Computer Science EducationWeek (December 5-11). The largest learning event in history,the Hour of Code reaches over 100 million students in over 180 countries with activities available in over 45 languages. |
Toys for Tots DonationsPosted on: Wednesday, December 21, 2016Schools throughout the York County School Division support numerous charitable organizations, and two schools have really jumped in to support Toys for Tots this holiday season. Grafton High School’s (GHS) math department collected enough toys to fill a truck and trailer, while third grade students at Magruder Elementary School (MES) raised money for the program by creating holiday goods to sell to their peers. The MES students learned about making goods, providing a service, and supply and demand while also learning how to help others. |
