Tackling Teamwork and Innovation at Waller Mill Elementary SchoolPosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017Teamwork and innovation have been the theme in resource classes at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) this week. Kathryn Nabors challenged her physical education students to work together by cooperative cup stacking. The students paired up and were each able to use just one hand to develop different patterns with the cups. In the library, students read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf and then addressed the idea of whether the wolf really could blow down the house. Students were challenged to build a house of toothpicks and playdough that the wolf (a.k.a. blow dryer with a wolf mask) couldn’t blow down. |

YCSD Student Art on Display in RichmondPosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017NASA Langley Research Center held a nationwide art contest for students in kindergarten through grade 12 to commemorate NASA's centennial celebration. While the results of the contest won’t be released until sometime in February, artwork from five York County School Division students have been selected to be among 24 that will be on display at the Virginia General Assembly Building in Richmond for the duration of this year’s General Assembly session. Lanson Shen, a first grader at Seaford Elementary School, was one of the youngest artists recognized and one of only two first graders included in this group. |
Tabb Middle School Engineering ShowcasePosted on: Friday, January 27, 2017Tabb Middle School (TMS) students enrolled in Terry Guthrie's Ready, Set, Go class participated in an engineering showcase last week. Over the course of six blocks, student teams acted as computer and environmental engineers who were charged to design and build a robotic device with moving parts, lights, and or sensors for the purpose of improving water quality. Teams had to describe a specific target problem with the Bay then explain how their device represented a solution. They used the last State of the Bay Report to understand the real issues in need of improvement. Guests were invited to the showcase to represent concerned citizens of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. They reviewed and evaluated prototype solutions and provided feedback on a rubric. |

Vernon Elementary School (MVES) cafeteria manager, Robin Ramsey, makes a habit on visiting with students during the lunch block. She likes to talk to them about what they are eating and encourages them to try healthy new options. The students enjoy talking to "Miss Robin" and being able to give their feedback about the lunch options. |
Bruton High School Student TeachersPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017Students enrolled in the Governor’s School of Health Science at Bruton High School (BHS) took their learning on the road to help educate students at Waller Mill Elementary School. The BHS students selected health-related topics, such as home safety, dental hygiene, germ control and first aid. Each student reviewed teaching strategies and elementary SOL’s, and then devised lesson plans to deliver. The Bruton students not only discovered how rewarding and complex teaching can be, but truly enjoyed interacting with the elementary students. |
Yorktown Elementary School Stock Market ChampionsPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students know their stocks. A team of students in Kirsten McLeod’s was recently named the top elementary team in the statewide Stock Market Game (SMG) fall 2016 competition. Not only did they outperform all the elementary teams across Virginia, they ranked 16th of the 784 teams representing elementary, middle and high schools in the state. The students and Ms. McLeod will be recognized at the annual SMG Luncheon/Awards program held in Richmond in May. |
ACT-SO HonoreesPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017On Monday, January 16, high school students from around the area were honored at the ACT-SO Breakfast in Williamsburg. Among the honorees were 19 students from each of York County School Division’s five high schools. The annual event honors the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the high academic and cultural achievement of minority students. |
YCSD Science FairPosted on: Friday, January 20, 2017The annual York County Science & Engineering Fair took place at the Grafton School Complex on January 12. More than 280 students from across York County secondary schools competed in 17 categories. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University in March. Professional scientists and engineers from throughout the community volunteered their time to evaluate our students’ work. Over $1,000, in cash prizes and special awards, was awarded during the ceremony. |
