York High School Earns Environmental Action Award

Posted on: Friday, February 03, 2017

AskGreen.org has selected York High School (YHS) as a recipient of its annual Environmental Action Award for the school’s water bottle filling stations. The stations give students the option of refilling water bottles throughout the school day without using a sink or water fountain, which can be messy and unsanitary. AskHRgreen.org selected the project because of its focus on the quality, safety and affordability of tap water; the importance of reusing and reducing plastic in the waste stream; and the legacy created by the project to serve as a reminder for students for years to come. The school will receive a plaque and $100 award at a ceremony later this month.

Tackling Teamwork and Innovation at Waller Mill Elementary School

Posted on: Friday, January 27, 2017

Teamwork and innovation have been the theme in resource classes at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) this week. Kathryn Nabors challenged her physical education students to work together by cooperative cup stacking. The students paired up and were each able to use just one hand to develop different patterns with the cups. In the library, students read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf and then addressed the idea of whether the wolf really could blow down the house. Students were challenged to build a house of toothpicks and playdough that the wolf (a.k.a. blow dryer with a wolf mask) couldn’t blow down.

Tabb Middle School Engineering Showcase

Posted on: Friday, January 27, 2017

Tabb Middle School (TMS) students enrolled in Terry Guthrie's Ready, Set, Go class participated in an engineering showcase last week. Over the course of six blocks, student teams acted as computer and environmental engineers who were charged to design and build a robotic device with moving parts, lights, and or sensors for the purpose of improving water quality. Teams had to describe a specific target problem with the Bay then explain how their device represented a solution. They used the last State of the Bay Report to understand the real issues in need of improvement. Guests were invited to the showcase to represent concerned citizens of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. They reviewed and evaluated prototype solutions and provided feedback on a rubric.

Bruton High School Student Teachers

Posted on: Friday, January 20, 2017

Students enrolled in the Governor’s School of Health Science at Bruton High School (BHS) took their learning on the road to help educate students at Waller Mill Elementary School. The BHS students selected health-related topics, such as home safety, dental hygiene, germ control and first aid. Each student reviewed teaching strategies and elementary SOL’s, and then devised lesson plans to deliver. The Bruton students not only discovered how rewarding and complex teaching can be, but truly enjoyed interacting with the elementary students.
