Dare Elementary School Earns National Green Zone AwardPosted on: Friday, June 09, 2017The National Center for the Prevention of Community Violence (NCPCV) has just given Dare Elementary School (DES) its first national Green Zone School of the Year award. The Green Zone is a school wide coaching program created by NCPCV, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing violence by providing community based resources for all ages. The Green Zone provides school-wide language for all to use when appropriate behaviors are being shown and when they are not. The award was presented by NCPCV’s Founder and Director Bobby Kipper during a special ceremony at the school on June 9. In noting that this is the first national Green Zone award presented by the organization, Kipper stated that Dare Elementary is a model school for the program. Principal Lindsey Caccavale adopted the Green Zone program during the 2014-15 school year. Tabb High Student to Attend National Youth Leadership ForumPosted on: Thursday, May 25, 2017Haley Williams, a Tabb High School (THS) junior, has been nominated and selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum this summer. The camp is through George Mason University (GMU) and focuses on all different branches of forensic science. At the camp, students will have the opportunity to simulate a crime scene, go to trial, and solve the case. When asked what she is most excited about, William's said, "I am excited about getting to talk to the CSI people, take evidence, and work with others." Funding for the camp has been partially provided through a York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. grant. |
Magruder Elementary School Supports FISHPosted on: Thursday, May 25, 2017The Magruder Elementary School (MES) Student Council Association (SCA) hosted a "Bucket-filling Food Drive" in April and May. Students and staff collected several carloads of non-perishable food to donate to the non-profit organization FISH in Williamsburg. This week, the fifth grade SCA members took a field trip to FISH, where they unloaded the donated food and then went to work sorting and stocking the shelves at the food pantry. It was a great learning experience for the students, who enjoyed working with other community members to help prevent food instability for families in Williamsburg. |
2017 Graduation InformationPosted on: Thursday, May 25, 2017The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce that the York County Video Services Department will broadcast the 2017 graduation ceremonies, held at Kaplan Arena at the College of William & Mary, live online on the division’s YouTube channel. All graduation ceremonies will also be rebroadcast for a limited time on YCSD-TV, Cox Cable channel 47 and Verizon channel 39. Congratulations to the Class of 2017! Combined, these students have been awarded more than $20 million in scholarships! Fourth Grade Knowledge BowlPosted on: Friday, May 19, 2017Grafton Bethel Elementary School’s fourth grade Knowledge Bowl was a fun learning success! More than 115 students rotated through multiple learning stations in the gymnasium to review and relearn Virginia’s many historical and geographical facts. Teachers got into the spirit by dressing in a variety of 19th century attire. At the quilting center, students learned to thread a needle and sew their own pocket purse, while understanding how quilts were utilized as an important part of the Underground Railroad. Additionally, the students had a hand in making quilts that will be donated to the York County Foster Program. In another station, students covered large laminated maps with five colors of dough depicting Virginia’s five regions. Student groups worked together to label the industries, agricultural products, and natural resources found in each region. One of the highlights of the nights was the Deal or No Deal activity. Schools Team Up for Fun RunPosted on: Friday, May 19, 2017The Yorktown Elementary School Girls On The Run and Yorktown Middle School Heart and Sole programs completed a fun run together recently. This was a wonderful experience to have the two teams meet and work together to complete the run in preparation for their upcoming 5K on May 21, 2017 at Virginia Wesleyan College. Girls On The Run (grades 3-5) and Heart and Sole (grades 6-8) are both curriculum-based programs that incorporate running into the lessons as well as fostering relationships between the girls on the team. |
ODU Regional Stock Market Game WinnersPosted on: Friday, May 19, 2017The results for ODU Regional Stock Market games from fall 2016, spring 2017, and year-long 2016-17 have been announced. Dare Elementary had two teams, led by Candace Holzman, that placed 1st and 2nd in the region for the year-long game. The 1st place team also finishing 4th in the state. The Yorktown Elementary team, led by Kirsten McLeod, placed 2nd in the region for fall 2016. Finally, two teams from Tabb High School, led by Gordon Chai, placed 1st and 3rd in the region for the spring 2017 game. Congratulations to these YCSD students and teachers! |
Grafton Bethel Elementary School Digital Breakout: Asteroid CollisionPosted on: Friday, May 19, 2017Breakout activities are engaging students across the division. Fifth graders in Lynn Morris’ class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) participated in the Asteroid Collision digital breakout. Students worked together to solve four locks in 45 minutes to save the space station from impending doom. In the quest to save themselves, they had to solve multistep math problems to find the digital lock, decode a directional lock, use logic to solve the color lock, and use reading skills to discover the word lock. Students were very excited to save the space station. It was an awesome lesson. |
YCSD Divisionwide PowderPuffPosted on: Friday, May 19, 2017The York High School Class of 2018 hosted the annual county powderpuff football tournament and fundraising event on Friday, May 12. Despite the rain, many came out to enjoy the festival activities, organized by the school’s Leadership class, prior to the flag football games and cheer competitions. At the end of the night, Bruton High School walked away with a clean sweep, taking home both the football trophy and the cheer spirit stick. The event raised more than $1,200 for local charities which were selected by each high school. |
Yorktown Elementary School Accepts DonationPosted on: Friday, May 12, 2017During an assembly to kick off a school-wide read of Lemonade Wars, members of the York Republican Women made a generous donation to Yorktown Elementary School (YES). The funds will allow select students to choose books that will be placed in their home libraries and support life-long literacy. Mrs. Sheila Noll, York County Board of Supervisors Chair, Mrs. Cindy Kirschke, YCSD School Board District 2 Representative, Mrs. Pat Barker, and Mrs. Mary Moore presented the donation to YES reading specialists and students. |
