TMS Teacher Named Virginia Region II Teacher of the Year

Please join us in congratulating Theresa Goltermann, Tabb Middle School, who was just named the Virginia Region II Teacher of the Year! Dr. Victor Shandor, division superintendent, and Dr. Steven Constantino, asst. superintendent for instruction for the Virginia Department of Education, division administrators, and school board member Jimmy Richardson made the surprise announcement in front of the school's entire student body today. Mrs. Golternmann now represents 16 school divisions from throughout Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore as one of 8 finalists for Virginia Teacher of the Year! The Virginia Teacher of the Year will be selected next week at the governors reception in Richmond. We are so proud to have her presented YCSD!!


YCSD Earns 14 VIP Awards

Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Virginia Board of Education have released the 2017 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards. This year, 13 schools and the division earned a VIP award. Even more impressive is that two schools, Coventry and Mt. Vernon, have been honored each year since the program’s inception. Four elementary schools – Coventry, Mt. Vernon, Tabb and Waller Mill – earned the Board of Education’s Excellence Award. This award recognizes schools that have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board. The state honored 146 schools with this award. Nine schools – Bethel Manor Elementary, Dare Elementary, Grafton Bethel Elementary, Seaford Elementary, Grafton Middle, Tabb Middle, Grafton High, Tabb High, and York High – earned the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award for meeting all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board. 231 schools across the state received this award. YCSD was also one of only 15 school systems in the state to earn the award as a division.


Seaford Elementary Quiz Bowl

Fourth grade students at Seaford Elementary School competed in their annual Quiz Bowl Competition on Thursday, June 8. The students studied the Virginia Studies SOL essential knowledge from flash cards with a question and answer throughout the year to help prepare for the SOL. The students are then chosen to represent their class in the competition. Those not on the class team still participated by trying to answer the questions themselves. This year, while it was a tight contest, students in Wendy Jones’ class were named the winning team.


York High School Principal Named PTA Power Partner

Congratulations to York High School (YHS) Principal Shannon Butler who has just been named a Virginia PTA Power Partner principal! The PTA program recognizes principals and superintendents from across the state who have shown that a strong family-school partnership is key to student success. Dr. Butler will be honored at the Virginia PTA annual conference in Richmond on July 14. “This is such a well-deserved honor for Dr. Butler. To receive this award in her second year of leading a high school is certainly commendable,” shared YCSD Superintendent Victor Shandor, Ed.D. "She has dedicated a significant amount of time building relationships with not only students and staff but with parents, community members, and business partners. Dare Elementary School Earns National Green Zone Award

The National Center for the Prevention of Community Violence (NCPCV) has just given Dare Elementary School (DES) its first national Green Zone School of the Year award. The Green Zone is a school wide coaching program created by NCPCV, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing violence by providing community based resources for all ages. The Green Zone provides school-wide language for all to use when appropriate behaviors are being shown and when they are not. The award was presented by NCPCV’s Founder and Director Bobby Kipper during a special ceremony at the school on June 9. In noting that this is the first national Green Zone award presented by the organization, Kipper stated that Dare Elementary is a model school for the program. Principal Lindsey Caccavale adopted the Green Zone program during the 2014-15 school year. Tabb High Student to Attend National Youth Leadership Forum

Haley Williams, a Tabb High School (THS) junior, has been nominated and selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum this summer. The camp is through George Mason University (GMU) and focuses on all different branches of forensic science. At the camp, students will have the opportunity to simulate a crime scene, go to trial, and solve the case. When asked what she is most excited about, William's said, "I am excited about getting to talk to the CSI people, take evidence, and work with others." Funding for the camp has been partially provided through a York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. grant.


Magruder Elementary School Supports FISH

The Magruder Elementary School (MES) Student Council Association (SCA) hosted a "Bucket-filling Food Drive" in April and May. Students and staff collected several carloads of non-perishable food to donate to the non-profit organization FISH in Williamsburg. This week, the fifth grade SCA members took a field trip to FISH, where they unloaded the donated food and then went to work sorting and stocking the shelves at the food pantry. It was a great learning experience for the students, who enjoyed working with other community members to help prevent food instability for families in Williamsburg.


2017 Graduation Information

The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce that the York County Video Services Department will broadcast the 2017 graduation ceremonies, held at Kaplan Arena at the College of William & Mary, live online on the division’s YouTube channel. All graduation ceremonies will also be rebroadcast for a limited time on YCSD-TV, Cox Cable channel 47 and Verizon channel 39. Congratulations to the Class of 2017! Combined, these students have been awarded more than $20 million in scholarships! Additional details provided by each school about this year’s graduating class, including profiles of the valedictorians and salutatorians, are available on the division website.


Fourth Grade Knowledge Bowl

Grafton Bethel Elementary School’s fourth grade Knowledge Bowl was a fun learning success! More than 115 students rotated through multiple learning stations in the gymnasium to review and relearn Virginia’s many historical and geographical facts. Teachers got into the spirit by dressing in a variety of 19th century attire. At the quilting center, students learned to thread a needle and sew their own pocket purse, while understanding how quilts were utilized as an important part of the Underground Railroad. Additionally, the students had a hand in making quilts that will be donated to the York County Foster Program. In another station, students covered large laminated maps with five colors of dough depicting Virginia’s five regions. Student groups worked together to label the industries, agricultural products, and natural resources found in each region. One of the highlights of the nights was the Deal or No Deal activity. Schools Team Up for Fun Run

The Yorktown Elementary School Girls On The Run and Yorktown Middle School Heart and Sole programs completed a fun run together recently. This was a wonderful experience to have the two teams meet and work together to complete the run in preparation for their upcoming 5K on May 21, 2017 at Virginia Wesleyan College. Girls On The Run (grades 3-5) and Heart and Sole (grades 6-8) are both curriculum-based programs that incorporate running into the lessons as well as fostering relationships between the girls on the team.
