United Way School Kindness Week

The United Way of the Virginia Peninsula challenged school divisions across Hampton Roads to celebrate KINDNESS during the week of November 12-16. YCSD staff and students embraced this challenge, with special theme days and Coins for Kindness Bucket fundraisers.

The Bucket Campaign raised $2,421.98 in total from 23 schools, with Waller Mill Elementary collecting the most change - a total of $490!

Students were also eligible to participate in the United Way’s Kindness Essay Writing Contest, and we are pleased to announce several #TeamYCSD students were recognized from among the 400 contest submissions:

Elementary School Winners: (K-5)

  • 1st place: Gracie Morehouse, 5th grade, Dare Elementary School, York County School Division

Honorable Mention:

  • Kendall Bird, 3rd grade, Coventry Elementary School, York County School Division
  • Olivia Wargo, Tabb Elementary, York County School Division

Middle School Winners (6-8):

  • 2nd place: Morgan Hatfield, Yorktown Middle School, York County School Division

All 1st place winners will have their work be published in the Daily Press and all of the student recognized have beeb invited to attend the United Way Campaign Celebration in February.
