YCSD Schools Closed - March 16-27, 2020Posted on: Friday, March 13, 2020As you may have heard, at approximately 2:30 this afternoon Governor Northam ordered all Virginia public schools to close for a minimum of two weeks, beginning Monday, March 16 and through at least Friday, March 27, 2020. We know our students, families and staff will have many questions as we enter these unchartered waters. I want to assure you that YCSD staff have a plan for the continuity of learning for this very possibility. Our teachers have been developing those resources today and we will share more information on how parents and students can access these resources and tools within the next few days. Additionally, we will be providing staff with information regarding our continuity of operations and expectations for working from home during this closure. Please continue to monitor email, voice mail, text messages, the division website, and official social media pages for updates and information. Once again, all schools are closed by order of the Governor for a minimum of two wee |
YCSD Coronavirus UpdatePosted on: Thursday, March 12, 2020I want to begin by thanking you for your continued support of the York County School Division as we have navigated through two unprecedented and complex situations, the Grafton electrical fire and the worldwide coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, in the last six weeks. As always, the safety and well-being of our students, staff and families is the top priority. While we have taken many steps to prepare for and mitigate the potential impact of the COVID-19 in our community, we know further action is warranted and we are now moving into the next phase of our Pandemic Response Plan. This includes adjusting school operations to limit student and staff travel while also minimizing outside access to our school buildings. As part of our response plan, tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2020 will now be a designated student holiday and a staff workday for all employees. |
YCSD Restores Bus Schedule and RoutesPosted on: Tuesday, March 03, 2020After adjusting student transportation this week, YCSD will return to bus routes and schedules that were previously in place. Instructional Material ReviewPosted on: Wednesday, February 12, 2020The York County School Division is currently conducting an Instructional Material Review (IMR) process for K-8 Mathematics, History/Social Science 6 and 7, AP Chemistry, Ecology, Atmospheric Science, and Discrete Mathematics. All textbooks, teacher resources, student materials and electronic materials are reviewed and adopted through this process. Materials that correlate highly with the Virginia Standards of Learning, YSCD curriculum, and The College Board were targeted for the review process. At this time, parents and community stakeholders are invited to review, and provide feedback, on the materials recommended for adoption. The public preview day is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the YCSD School Board Office in conference room D. |
Grafton Complex Status UpdatePosted on: Thursday, February 06, 2020Monday’s fire, though contained to the electrical room, resulted in a total loss of the main electrical distribution panel for the complex leaving the building without power. While smoke spread through the entire complex, the only sprinkler heads activated were those in the electrical room. The greatest impact of the smoke damage is on the middle school side of the complex. |
Grafton Complex Closed - Feb. 6 & 7Posted on: Tuesday, February 04, 2020This is an important message from the York County School Division regarding the status of the Grafton Complex. Grafton High School and Grafton Middle School will remain closed to all students and staff through Friday, February 7, 2020. |
Grafton Complex Closed - Feb. 4 & 5Posted on: Monday, February 03, 2020Just before 4 pm today, school administrators initiated evacuation procedures due to reports of an electrical issue in the main electrical room. As emergency responders arrived, an active fire was discovered. The fire was contained to that electrical room though smoke did spread through parts of the building. Due to the nature of this incident, power to the building remains off and Dominion Energy is on site assessing the situation. We do not yet have an estimate for power restoration or a timeline for necessary repairs. Therefore, school is canceled for Grafton High School and Grafton Middle School tomorrow Tuesday, February 4 and Wednesday, February 5. |
WMES First Grade Habitat ProjectPosted on: Wednesday, January 29, 2020Jamie Looby’s first grade class at Waller Mill learned all about animals during their Animal Unit in science. Students learned that animals need air, water, food, and shelter. Students classified animals based on being mammals, reptiles, birds or amphibians. They then learned more about where they live, how they move, body coverings, etc. To show what they have learned, students had the opportunity to put it all together and make a 3D model of an animal of their choice. Students then presented their animal to the class, along with important information about the animal |
