Students in Tiffany Heiser's Art Classes at Tabb High School walked away with wins in this year's art competition sponsored by the Yorktown Woman's Club. Austin Hearn placed first in Printmaking. Jake Kimball placed first in Pastels. Sydney Strader placed first in Painting. Best in Show at this year's art competition sponsored by the Yorktown Woman's Club was one of Leann Sasamoto's photography students, Kayla Lupton. Kayla's photography entries were included in the Natural History and the Scenic categories. |

The awards are based on student achievement on state assessments during 2008-2009 and the previous school year. |
Middle School Students RecognizedPosted on: Friday, March 19, 2010Yorktown Middle School (YMS) students were selected as Most Outstanding (MO) and Most Improved (MI) for third quarter of 2009/2010 school year. Principal Candi Skinner and Guidance Director Dr. Patricia Johnson presented certificates to the students at the MO/MI recognition. The YMS PTA also rewarded each student with a goody bag. |
Students Design Postcards for Yorktown MiddlePosted on: Friday, March 19, 2010Yorktown Middle School (YMS) students recently participated in a contest to design a postcard for YMS staff to send positive messages to parents throughout the school year. Seventh grade student Michelle Kasbohm’s entry was selected by the YMS students. Principal Candi Skinner presented Michelle a stuffed Falcon and a YMS cup to congratulate her on her winning design. |

Celebrity Art at York HighPosted on: Friday, March 19, 2010Students in Juli Semanski's Foundations Art class at York High School created drawings of celebrities while studying Photorealism in this introductory art class. They selected a small (4.5" x 6") black and white photo of a celebrity and enlarged it 4 times, using the grid method. Then they used pencil to create realistic 18" x 24" drawings. The pieces were then displayed in the York High media center. |
Students Count RicePosted on: Friday, March 19, 2010Reading the story "The Grains of Rice" by Demi, prompted the third grade class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School to figure out how many grains of rice there would be if you doubled and kept on doubling the amount. The final amount after doubling 30 times was huge! Results of their calculations were displayed in the hallway. |

Tabb Middle Students Receive Technology AwardsPosted on: Friday, March 19, 2010Tabb Middle School (TMS) garnered 12 trophies at the Technology Student Association (TSA) Tidewater regional competition that was held at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Nineteen students competed in ten different team and individual events. The mission of the Technology Student Association is to foster personal growth, leadership and opportunities in technology, innovation, design and engineering. TSA is made up of 150,000 middle and high school students and 2,500 teachers and advisors in 48 state delegations. |
