Battle of the Books Teams

Mt. Vernon Elementary and Coventry Elementary schools were among the many elementary schools from the York County School Division to participate in the annual Battle of the Books held by the York County Public Library. Students who participated read 15 books and answered a series of questions about the books. The team from Coventry Elementary School won third place in the competition while the team from Mt. Vernon came in fifth place.


YMS Wins the County Battle of the Books Competition!

On Wednesday, March 6, 2013, the Yorktown Middle School Battle of the Books team defended their championship at the County competition held at the Tabb Public Library. The YMS team will compete against teams from Hampton, Newport News and Williamsburg at the regional competition to be held at the Williamsburg Regional Library on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 12:30 p.m.


Magruder Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss's Birthday!

A Dr. Seuss workshop was held in Magruder Elementary School's library on March 1, 2013 in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday. At the workshop, students listened to Dr. Seuss books that were read by teachers and parents. They also played Dr. Seuss games and had their pictures taken in the Dr. Seuss photo booth. After reading books and playing games students enjoyed green eggs and ham for breakfast.

Tabb Middle School (TMS) students returned to their Tabb Elementary School (TES) roots to "Grab a hat and read with a class." Many TMS readers came to TES to kick off Read Across America.


YHS Drama Kicks off Read Across America Month at WMES

On Friday, March 1, 2013, students from the York High School Drama Department helped kick off Read Across America Month at Waller Mill Elementary School. Drama students dressed up as familiar characters as students collaborated in this celebration of Dr. Seuss and the love of reading in the annual Storybook Character Parade.


Tabb DECA Wins at State Leadership Conference

Virginia DECA played host to 3,300 high school DECA members in Virginia Beach at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, March 1-3, 2013. Conference attendees participated in workshops, elected the upcoming executive board and competed in competency based individual and team, series and written events. Winners from the District Leadership Conference from Tabb High School DECA that continued on to the State Leadership Conference were Sarah Burkett, Rachel Deyerle, Hannah Dun, Logan Lancaster, Rebecca Mackey, Brooke Mahan, Taylor Stubbs, Courtney Taylor and Amanda Varnes. Courtney Taylor's outstanding job in the Hotel Lodging Management Event and Brooke Mahan's and Taylor Stubbs' excellent team Entrepreneurship Innovative Plan won them the opportunity to continue on to the International


HELP, MY CHILD IS ALMOST A SENIOR! Parent University

The Grafton High School Guidance Department has brought together a group of “experts” to give parents the information they need to help rising seniors make decisions about their future. The event will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the GHS Auditorium. The following topics will be offered: College Admissions, Financial Aid, Scholarships, SAT Preparation and Military Options.


Kindergarteners Skype to Discuss Presidents

Magruder's kindergarteners met up with their counterparts at Waller Mill via Skype Wednesday to trade facts about two famous Presidents; Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Even the littlest patriots love participating in transformative learning!
