Third Graders at Magruder Travel Undersea with Dr. SteinbergPosted On: Friday, March 29, 2013 |
Third grade students at Magruder Elementary School had a very special and exciting visit from Dr. Deborah K. Steinberg, a Professor of Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Dr. Steinberg presented the students with a hands-on account of the ocean and brought along several creatures for the students to view and touch. Dr. Steinberg discussed adaptations of many ocean animals and explained to students the reason for each adaptation. The students were also interested to learn about the zones of the ocean and the various animals that live in each zone. Dr. Steinberg concluded her lesson by helping the students to become angler fish. Students were provided head bands that featured a glow in the dark lure. In a dark room, students were able to see and experience how angler fish must adapt to surroundings in order to find food in the deepest parts of the ocean. The presentation came at a perfect time since the third graders are learning about habitats this week. |
