2021-22 School Calendar

The York County School Division will move to a pre-Labor Day opening for the 2021-22 school year after the School Board voted unanimously to adopt the calendar committee's recommendation. The 2021-22 school year will begin on Monday, August 30, 2021 and end on Friday, June 10, 2022.

Changes to state law allow school divisions across the state to open 14 calendar days prior to Labor Day, though the division has only implemented a one-week shift at this time. Further evaluation and consideration will be given to adjusting future school calendars to maximize the instructional benefits of beginning the school year as early as the state allows.

Calendar Adoption Process

A division calendar committee comprising administrators, teachers, staff and parents began meeting in January to review considerations and options for the 2021-22 school calendar. The committee reviewed survey results from 2019 and, using TregoEd processes, established criteria for consideration in the development of the school calendar. The top criteria are listed below.

  • Maximizes opportunities to address COVID-19 learning slide
  • Maintains 2-week Winter Break
  • Improves instructional alignment for students in AP, IB, and other special programs
  • Increases instructional time prior to SOL testing in March and May
  • Ends the school year earlier

In March, the committee's recommendation for a Pre-Labor calendar was presented to the School Board, along with a traditional Post-Labor Day calendar. Public comments were accepted online from March 8 through March 17.
