Title:   INTERPRETER-TRANSLITERATOR

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Serves as the facilitator of communication between the student with hearing impairment, school staff, fellow students, and others as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level III or hold any Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certificate (Excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation); shall have achieved a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Cued Speech Level III or National Cued Speech Association Cued Speech Transliterator Certificate; for providing interpreting services for students requiring oral interpreting shall have met Virginia Quality Assurance Screening’s minimum requirements for competency on the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of national and state Quality Assurance Cued Speech.
  • Considerable knowledge of interpreting services, including oral interpreting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students and the general public.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Interpret/transliterate the teacher's/speaker's message, conveying the content and spirit of the speaker.
  • Interpret/transliterate all classroom discussion, conversations, and school assemblies.
  • Respects confidentiality in all areas of their interpreting/transliterating assignments.
  • Learns signs and/or cues for special vocabulary prior to need.
  • Conferences with students to discuss new signs and/or cues for special class related vocabulary.
  • Fosters independence in students by:
  • a. Directing the student to the teacher when the student has questions.
  • b. Encouraging the student to get class notes and assignments without the interpreter's assistance.
  • Avoids advising, counseling, or interjecting personal opinions into the interpreted/transliterated instruction or within the educational assignment.
  • a. As a member of the educational team, the interpreter acts only as a facilitator of information between the student and team members.
  • b. The interpreter acts so as not to be utilized as an instructor, tutor, or aide in the school setting.
  • Strives to maintain high professional standards in compliance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or National Cued Speech Association.
  • Attends professional workshops to stay current in the field.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Reports to:
Director of Student Services
Terms of Employment:
Ten months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certificated personnel.
