Title:   ENERGY EDUCATOR

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Establishes accountability for energy consumption at every level in the school division and develops and monitors the division’s energy management program in accordance with school board policy and guidelines established for the purpose of reducing utility consumption.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two years of college coursework and two years experience working for a public school system; Bachelors Degree in education, business administration, or communications and five years experience working for a public school system preferred; must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Training and experience in use of word processing software and initiative to learn other computer programs as required to create and maintain a database, and to prepare technical reports and documentation.
  • Ability to operate in a team environment as well as work independently. Must possess a positive work ethic, and ability to make sound judgments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain positive public relations, as well as effective, professional working relationships with all school division employees, and to communicate with both technical and non-technical individuals.
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions, interpret technical data and recognize different signs and symbols.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, reach, and to push, pull and/or lift forty (40) pounds; walk or stand for long periods of time; work occasionally in confined spaces; grasp, hold, and manipulate tools and parts.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Reports to the Director of Maintenance and Facilities Support any safety hazards observed.
  • Reports to supervisor at least once monthly as to status of the division’s energy consumption.
  • Provides regular communication with principals and custodial staffs as to status of their buildings’ energy consumption.
  • Provides input on contractual support activities (capital projects) related to energy management and the purchase of any products that affect energy consumption.

  • Prepares energy requirement estimates and budget allotments for all division facilities; maintains all energy and water consumption records and data.
  • Maintains records of federal energy conservation grants received by the division; ensures division participation in any rebate program(s) offered.
  • Conducts regular walk-through audits of all the division’s facilities to insure operating efficiency, an optimum educational environment and compliance with the division’s energy policy.
  • Coordinates usage of facilities and insures proper space utilization consistent with energy conservation.
  • Develops and maintains contact with federal and state agencies and monitors state and national energy policy trends.
  • Develops procedures for efficient utilization of energy sources; implements shutdown checklists for every building in the division for weekday, weekend, holiday, and summer recess.
  • Implements night setback program for every building in the division for weeknights, weekends, holidays and summer recess.
  • Insures compliance with division's custodian affidavit program to insure efficient energy usage by custodial staff during summer work programs.
  • Insures that the division is on proper utility rate schedule and is receiving correct billing.
  • Organizes program wherein building principal or custodian reads all meters on same days as utility companies.
  • Establishes a program to promote energy conservation through positive feedback to all levels of administration and involves all personnel and students in taking ownership for success of program.
  • Utilizes all media opportunities to promote successes of the division’s energy management program.
  • Coordinates with the Director of Maintenance and Facilities Support any installation and/or repairs of energy management systems; maintains wiring and installation diagrams of the systems.
  • Works with the building and maintenance personnel on proper operation of the systems and equipment; attends all scheduled in-services on the energy management system.
  • Assists with the design and maintenance of the programming for computerized energy management system to insure operating efficiency; updates programs as necessary.
  • Advises, assists and makes recommendations on alternate energy sources, consumption and general energy conservation measures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Director of Information Services
Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. School Board approved salary.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
