Title:   ELEMENTARY LITERACY COACH

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Develop and implement instruction that will effectively provide the best possible reading and language arts program for each teacher and student. Position is responsible for supporting the professional growth and development of teachers to facilitate learning and independent application of effective instructional practices. Position works with the Coordinator of English and Language Arts (K-12) to implement the division’s coaching model across selected elementary schools. Position provides job-embedded support through planning, modeling, co-teaching, conducting classroom visits, analyzing data, and offering collegial and actionable feedback. Position plans and conducts professional development based on assessed division and/or teacher needs. Position works in collaboration with the curriculum department to coordinate professional growth and development of teachers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree and be eligible for a Virginia teaching license (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Must have completed a minimum of three years of exemplary teaching experience at the elementary level.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Ability to monitor academic and social behavior of students.
  • Ability to move about the room to monitor students and check work in classrooms with varied seating and desk organization patterns.
  • Ability to prepare required written reports.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Excel to develop and utilize school level reports.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Comply with school and school board policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of literacy best practices and the York County Elementary Literacy Model
  • Work cooperatively with the total staff
  • Relate positively to parents and other community representatives.
  • Be prompt and accurate with required records and reports.
  • Demonstrate command of standard English, both spoken and written
  • Accept responsibilities outside the classroom as they relate to the school.
  • Assume responsibility for care of materials, equipment and facilities.
  • Assume responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to the teacher's care.
  • Tutor individuals in need of remediation
  • Teach small groups where remediation is needed.
  • Model collaborative teaching within inclusion classrooms
  • Function as a member of school teams and committees (i.e. child study student assistance)
  • Utilize student records - reading/language arts – when planning with teachers
  • Consult with classroom teachers and administrators concerning reading/language arts issues.
  • Conduct staff development sessions in reading/language arts
  • Recommend purchases for reading/language arts materials.
  • Consult with the principal regarding reading and writing needs of students and professional development needs of teachers.
  • Monitor reading/language arts assessment data.
  • Demonstrate and model teaching strategies in classroom.
  • Analyze and interpret reading/language arts data for teachers and parents.
  • Consult with parents regarding reading/language arts progress of their child.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Assesses the individual and collective needs of teachers at assigned schools.
  • Creates a comprehensive and systematic plan to support the professional growth of teachers.
  • Models effective instructional techniques and strategies that engage learners.
  • Provides differentiated coaching assistance through co-planning, modeling, co-teaching, and observing to deliver timely and appropriate feedback.
  • Structures coaching work using a gradual release model to ensure independent ownership and attainment of co-developed goals.
  • Works collaboratively to help reading specialists and teachers analyze data and plan targeted and appropriate lessons.
  • Develops individualized plans to support teacher sustainment of goals.
  • Assists with writing exemplary lesson plans to serve as a model.
  • Provides support in the areas of classroom motivation and management to help teachers establish orderly learning environments.
  • Plans and conducts high quality professional development activities in response to assessed needs.
  • Works positively toward meeting identified division and building goals.
  • Supports teachers in the development and implementation of professional growth plans.

Terms of Employment:
Teaching contract plus 5 days. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
