Canvas Access Restored

Instructure, the developer of Canvas, has reached an agreement with the threat actor who recently breached the Canvas platform. At this time, the data has been returned to Instructure and we have been assured by Instructure that the information will not be made public, customers will not be extorted over this data in the future, and all copies of the data taken have been deleted.

On Tuesday, May 12, YCSD restored full access to our Learning Management Software platform, Canvas. While services are back online, please remain alert for suspicious emails, phishing attempts, or messages claiming to be from school or technology support staff. Cybersecurity incidents are sometimes followed by scams designed to take advantage of heightened attention around an outage.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility throughout this disruption. We will continue monitoring system performance and security closely and will share updates with families as additional information becomes available from Instructure.

1:1 Technology Program Updates

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, the York County School Division will no longer permit students in grades 3-12 to use personally owned laptops for classroom use. Instead, all students in these grades will be provided with a division-issued device as part of the division’s 1:1 technology program.

This change builds on the division’s successful use of student devices since 2020 and reflects extensive teacher feedback and ongoing engagement with families. By standardizing devices across the division, schools can maintain consistent expectations for student use, reduce instructional distractions, and provide clearer support that maintain the focus on learning.

Summer Academic Programs

The York County School Division will offer several Summer Academy classes and enrichment opportunities beginning in June. You can access the 2026 Summer Academic Program Catalog on the Summer Academic Programs page on the division website. The catalog provides descriptions of each program, course, and enrichment opportunity, along with details on eligibility, registration, and the specific dates and times for each offering.

Best Community for Music Education

For the fifth consecutive year, the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has named YCSD as a "Best Community for Music Education" for its outstanding commitment to music education. Fewer than 30 Virginia school divisions achieved the coveted status this year.

The NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit organization, awards this designation to school divisions and schools demonstrating an exceptionally high commitment to offering comprehensive music education to all students. It further serves to recognize the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum.
