YCSD Art Contest WinnersPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013The York County School Division honored the Spring 2013 Student Art Contest winners during a reception on June 5, 2013. The contest is open to all YCSD students, with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Krupa Patel, a fifth grade student at Yorktown Elementary School, was awarded the elementary prize for her creation, while Queens Lake Middle School student Thomas Chai earned the secondary prize. Both pieces of artwork join a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. |
Principal Appointments AnnouncedPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013The York County School Board approved three principal appointments during the Special Meeting on June 10, 2013. Dr. Kendra Crump will serve as the principal of York High School. She is returning to work at the high school level after seven years as principal of Queens Lake Middle School. She worked previously as a high school teacher and assistant principal. Lindsey Wood Caccavale will serve as the principal of Dare Elementary School. She started her career as a teacher at Dare Elementary before working as Coordinator of Assessment, Compliance, and Intervention at Grafton Bethel Elementary and Waller Mill Elementary. She also has experience as an assistant principal in the Baltimore County Public Schools. Scott Meadows will join YCSD as principal of Queens Lake Middle School. |
YHS Teacher Honored by DiscoverEPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013John Hammons, a teacher at York High School, has been named a runner-up in the 2013 DiscoverE Educator Recognition Awards Program. The DiscoverE Educator Awards were established by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (AMSE) to shine a spotlight on educators who are inspiring tomorrow’s innovation generation by helping students discover engineering. The program is open to all full-time educators teaching in grades 6-12. A panel of judges selected three winners and eight runner-ups from the hundreds of nominees. In recognition of this distinction, Hammons will receive a $500 award, a 3M Shoot & Share digital camera, and a 3M gift pack of classroom supplies. |
YMS Students Perform Above National Averages on the National French Language Exam!Posted on: Friday, June 07, 2013Camille Perry and Sarah Benothmane, eighth grade students of Minouche Kaufman-Perry at Yorktown Middle School, have ranked nationally in the 78th annual National French Contest, Le Grand Concours. Students were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French 2. Nearly 100,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2013 event. Camille Perry ranked 6th in Virginia and 7th nationally, while Sarah Benothmane ranked 8th in Virginia and 9th nationally for French Level 2. |
¡Olé! Yorktown Middle Spanish Students Receive Top Honors!Posted on: Friday, June 07, 2013Congratulations to three World Language students from Yorktown Middle School (YMS) who attained national recognition for their excellent performance on the 2013 National Spanish Examinations (NSE). Alexis Haskiell, Rachel Shaffer and Mia Wyche, all seventh grade students of Minouche Kaufman-Perry, received Honorable Mention status. This is the first year that YMS World Language students participated in the online, standardized assessment for students in grades 6-12. The mission of the NSE is to recognize student achievement and to promote language proficiency in the study of Spanish. There are three categories of exam competition, depending upon the student's exposure to the language. All students are evaluated in the areas of Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Listening Comprehension. |

Project Search AwardPosted on: Friday, June 07, 2013The Project Search partnership between the York County School Division, the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, and the Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services that places student interns at Williamsburg Sentara Hospital is honored to share that the program has achieved 100% employment. There were only 15 programs nationwide and one in England that achieved 100% employment outcomes for the 2011 - 2012 year. Congratulations to all the program partners, businesses and families involved in this enormous effort! |

YHS Odyssey of the Mind Team Competes at World FinalsPosted on: Monday, June 03, 2013The York High School Odyssey of the Mind Team recently competed at World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The team placed 14th of 54 teams in the It’s How You Look at It, Division III problem solving competition. Teams are scored for their long-term problem solution, how well they solve a "spontaneous" problem on the spot, and "Style" -- the elaboration of their long-term problem solution. This is the highest placement the York High team has earned! |
