¡Olé! Yorktown Middle Spanish Students Receive Top Honors!

Congratulations to three World Language students from Yorktown Middle School (YMS) who attained national recognition for their excellent performance on the 2013 National Spanish Examinations (NSE). Alexis Haskiell, Rachel Shaffer and Mia Wyche, all seventh grade students of Minouche Kaufman-Perry, received Honorable Mention status. This is the first year that YMS World Language students participated in the online, standardized assessment for students in grades 6-12. The mission of the NSE is to recognize student achievement and to promote language proficiency in the study of Spanish. There are three categories of exam competition, depending upon the student's exposure to the language. All students are evaluated in the areas of Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Listening Comprehension.

Oscar Sobkowicz, a sixth grader at Tabb Middle School, won 1st Place for his entry in The York County Historical Committee’s 10th Annual Memorial Day Essay Contest. The theme of the essay was "York County Remembers."


Project Search Award

The Project Search partnership between the York County School Division, the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, and the Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services that places student interns at Williamsburg Sentara Hospital is honored to share that the program has achieved 100% employment. There were only 15 programs nationwide and one in England that achieved 100% employment outcomes for the 2011 - 2012 year. Congratulations to all the program partners, businesses and families involved in this enormous effort!

Tabb Middle School sixth graders Kaitlin Horton and Christina Graves won 1st and 2nd Place, respectively, for their entries into the York County Historical Committee 10th Annual Memorial Day Poster Contest. The theme of the poster was "York County Remembers the Civil War."


MVES Students Learn about Chesapeake Bay Crabs

Mt. Vernon Elementary School first grade students demonstrate what happens to a Chesapeake Bay blue crab as it gets too small for its shell and starts to molt. Katherine Kelchner, marine science teacher from St. Mary Star of the Sea, gave a presentation on the life cycle of a crab.


YHS Odyssey of the Mind Team Competes at World Finals

The York High School Odyssey of the Mind Team recently competed at World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The team placed 14th of 54 teams in the It’s How You Look at It, Division III problem solving competition. Teams are scored for their long-term problem solution, how well they solve a "spontaneous" problem on the spot, and "Style" -- the elaboration of their long-term problem solution. This is the highest placement the York High team has earned!


YCSD Chief Financial Officer Honored

Dennis Jarrett, York County School Division’s Chief Financial Officer, was recently named the Virginia Association of Schools Business Officials (VASBO) Cardinal Award winner for 2012-2013. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify professionalism, leadership and innovation in the field of school business management.


Tabb High Student Attends Intel International Science Fair

Katherine Webb has just returned from this year's Intel International Science Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned her way with 1st place wins for her Earth Science category project, A Revised Estimate of the Effect of Human Carbon Dioxide Emissions on Global Temperature, in local and regional science fairs. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world's largest international pre-college science competition. More than 1,500 students from more than 70 countries, regions and territories attend the event to display their independent research in the different categories.


Collecting Data in AP Stats Just Got More Fun

Tabb High School students in Mr. Chris Olivo's Advance Placement Statistics course undertook a unique project designed to add a little fun to the data collection process. Students were divided into small groups and assigned the task of creating 40 paper airplanes based on four different styles. Once the building task was completed, they adjourned to the commons to fly the planes. Students then measured and recorded each plan’s flight distance using lengths of yarn. When the groups returned to class, they recorded the data and used the information to construct confidence intervals to determine the most effective design.


Bethel Manor Teachers Perform in SOL Revue Program

On Friday, May 10, 2013, students and teachers participated in the SOL Revue Program at Bethel Manor Elementary School. The program’s plot is based on The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy (Kindergarten teacher Beth Waller) has lost her way to be prepared for her upcoming test. Along the way, she encountered the Tin Man (Dawn Johnston), the Cowardly Lion (Billie Dambrauskas), the Scarecrow (Patty Richie), and Glenda the Good Witch (Dr. Betsy Poulsen, Principal) who each provided tips to be successful. Students enjoyed a variety of songs and skits, as all students came to show their support for students who will be testing this year.
