Educational Leaders Share Best PracticesPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013Several YCSD staff members took part in the recent Conference on Education in Richmond. The conference is sponsored annually by the Virginia School Boards Association as an opportunity for school administrators and school board members to share successful educational practices taking place throughout the state. YCSD presentations included such topics as staff development, work readiness programs for students with disabilities, and student engagement. In addition to staff presentation, School Board member Page Minter and Superintendent Eric Williams attended as representatives of the school division. |
YCSD Students Create Digital Educational ToolsPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013Dozens of students recently took part in a new weeklong summer camp this July. The camp, a partnership between the York County School Division (YCSD) and Discovery Education, was designed to give students hand-on experience with a new digital tool called Board Builder. Board Builder allows students to create and share interactive videos and photos with more than one million Discovery Education subscribers. YCSD students in grades 5-12 spent the week developing videos based upon a field trip to the Jamestown Settlement at the start of camp. The camp is part of a three-year contract with Discovery to help develop and test a beta version of Board Builder. York County teachers and students were the first in the country to use the tool, which went live to all subscribers in May. |
GBES Quilts for Social ServicesPosted on: Thursday, June 27, 2013Fourth graders at Grafton Bethel Elementary School worked on quilts as part of the Knowledge Bowl culminating activity of fourth grade VIrginia Studies. The quilts are donated to York Poquoson Social Services for use with children in need. |

YMS Students Meet French StudentsPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013Yorktown Middle School (YMS) students enrolled in French I and II courses started the year exchanging letters with native French speakers currently enrolled at Crossroads School in Norfolk, Virginia. The students were able to exchange letters four times during the year. The French students shared that they were excited to know other Americans besides the ones at their school, especially some who live near an important historical location in which French soldiers played an important role. The cementing element that helped make this pen pal project a true Transformative Learning Experience came about when all students involved met face to face at the YMS library. This encounter promoted students’ realization that different cultures, while seemingly the same, can really be very different. |
TMS Eighth Grade Community Service DayPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013On Wednesday, June 12, 2013, Tabb Middle School eighth graders participated in Community Service Day. Students volunteered at a variety of locations including York County School Division elementary schools, the Poquoson Public Library, Bethel Park, Bayside Convalescent Home, the York County Sports Complex, York Convalescent Home and the Bargain Box. While at their locations, students completed activities to give back to their community. Prior to Wednesday, students participated in a t-shirt design and essay writing contest about community service. Joel Frondelli created the winning t-shirt design and the essay contest winners included Lindsey Rivers (1st place), Danielle Nicholson (2nd place) and Caroline Lloyd (3rd place). |
YCSD Art Contest WinnersPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013The York County School Division honored the Spring 2013 Student Art Contest winners during a reception on June 5, 2013. The contest is open to all YCSD students, with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Krupa Patel, a fifth grade student at Yorktown Elementary School, was awarded the elementary prize for her creation, while Queens Lake Middle School student Thomas Chai earned the secondary prize. Both pieces of artwork join a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. |
Principal Appointments AnnouncedPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013The York County School Board approved three principal appointments during the Special Meeting on June 10, 2013. Dr. Kendra Crump will serve as the principal of York High School. She is returning to work at the high school level after seven years as principal of Queens Lake Middle School. She worked previously as a high school teacher and assistant principal. Lindsey Wood Caccavale will serve as the principal of Dare Elementary School. She started her career as a teacher at Dare Elementary before working as Coordinator of Assessment, Compliance, and Intervention at Grafton Bethel Elementary and Waller Mill Elementary. She also has experience as an assistant principal in the Baltimore County Public Schools. Scott Meadows will join YCSD as principal of Queens Lake Middle School. |
YHS Teacher Honored by DiscoverEPosted on: Monday, June 17, 2013John Hammons, a teacher at York High School, has been named a runner-up in the 2013 DiscoverE Educator Recognition Awards Program. The DiscoverE Educator Awards were established by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (AMSE) to shine a spotlight on educators who are inspiring tomorrow’s innovation generation by helping students discover engineering. The program is open to all full-time educators teaching in grades 6-12. A panel of judges selected three winners and eight runner-ups from the hundreds of nominees. In recognition of this distinction, Hammons will receive a $500 award, a 3M Shoot & Share digital camera, and a 3M gift pack of classroom supplies. |
YMS Students Perform Above National Averages on the National French Language Exam!Posted on: Friday, June 07, 2013Camille Perry and Sarah Benothmane, eighth grade students of Minouche Kaufman-Perry at Yorktown Middle School, have ranked nationally in the 78th annual National French Contest, Le Grand Concours. Students were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French 2. Nearly 100,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2013 event. Camille Perry ranked 6th in Virginia and 7th nationally, while Sarah Benothmane ranked 8th in Virginia and 9th nationally for French Level 2. |
