D.A.R.E Training ProgramPosted on: Friday, September 27, 2013The York County School Division (YCSD) partners with the York County Sheriff’s Office to provide the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program to all fourth grade students. This year, several YCSD elementary schools also hosted a school visitation training session for D.A.R.E. officers from around the state. |
We are Happy, Happy, Happy Students at SES!Posted on: Friday, September 27, 2013There was no ducking the “All About Me” writing assignment for fifth grade students at Seaford Elementary School (SES). Students also designed a paper body to reflect the characteristics they had described. To finish the self-portrait, students were given the opportunity to select their favorite Duck Dynasty beards using a picture of themselves and the Beard Booth Application on iPads. The final presentations were then displayed in the hallways. Students were very excited about the Duck Dynasty theme! |
Author Lester Laminack Visits BMESPosted on: Friday, September 27, 2013Lester Laminack, author of children’s books and academic publications, spoke to students during assemblies at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) and Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) this week. Students enjoyed learning about how an author gets ideas for writing. Laminack also provided professional development to teachers while here. |
GHS Commended StudentsPosted on: Friday, September 27, 2013Grafton High School (GHS) is proud to announce that three seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Program. A letter of Commendation was sent to each of these students. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2014 competition for national Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition for the National Merit Scholarship Award. |

Dr. Stephanie Guy, Chief Academic Officer, spent the first day of the new school year visiting various schools. She was caught in the act of helping a Yorktown Middle School sixth grade student and parent with the student’s locker. |

Yorktown Elementary School GardensPosted on: Friday, September 20, 2013Yorktown Elementary School students and staff designed and planted gardens around the school to enhance their science studies. Students learned how growing native plants help native Virginia animal species. Students have observed many insect species thrive in our gardens including the endangered Monarch Butterfly. |
Monster Rules at Seaford ElementaryPosted on: Friday, September 20, 2013After reading The Monster Who Came to School, a story about a monster that attended school and was not aware of rules, second grade students at Seaford Elementary School created their own monsters and wrote a rule for their monster to follow. The classes then created brief movie trailers using the iMovie app and shared their videos with first graders, who had also learned the story this year. This project kicked off the second grade unit on Citizenship. |
Bethel Manor Walks to Live WellPosted on: Friday, September 20, 2013Students and teachers at Bethel Manor Elementary School are Walking to Live Well! Walk to Live Well (WTLW) is a program designed to encourage kids to make healthy life choices such as walking and riding bikes on a daily basis. Each student that participates in the program signs a pledge to walk or ride a bike to school as many days as they possibly can. With each pledge signed, students receive a WTLW water bottle along with information on ways to make healthy and safe choices! |
