Seaford Elementary's Chorus Performs for Their CommunityPosted on: Friday, December 20, 2013The Seaford Elementary School (SES) fifth grade chorus performed their annual holiday concert at the York Senior Center on December 3, and the Seaford Women's Club on December 12. The chorus is under the direction of Mrs. Judy Mitchell. They performed holiday selections that included “My Favorite Things”, “Winter Wonderland”, “Silver Bells”, and many other holiday favorites. |
How Many York County Families Can a Family of Bulldogs Feed?Posted on: Friday, December 20, 2013Fourth grade students at Seaford Elementary School (SES) took the opportunity to combine their community outreach project with mathematics. Students graphed each grade level's contribution to the food bank. Then they calculated how many families could be fed and determined that 1,125 food items collected at SES would feed 65 families. Students delivered the donations to the York County Food Bank at St. Luke's Methodist Church. |

GHS Teacher Selected for National PresentationPosted on: Friday, December 13, 2013Two Grafton High School (GHS) English teachers, Aaron McQuillan and Annie Rehm, presented at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in Boston in November. The proposal was selected from more than 2,000 submissions for this year’s convention. The topic selected for presentation was Reinventing the Personal Narrative: Model It, Craft It, Publish It. The GHS teachers provided techniques for modeling writing with mentor texts, revising with rigor, and publishing using print-on-demand tools. |
Fort Eustis Drill Sergeants and Color Guard at GBESPosted on: Friday, December 13, 2013Members of the Fort Eustis Color Guard and the TRADOC Woodwind Quintet performed recently at the Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) special Veteran’s Celebration. SFC David Stover II, SFC Ryan McCaffrey, SGT Christopher Kagawa and SPC Frankie Wright, also visited classrooms to share how their personal military experiences have involved more than fighting in wars, such as humanitarian assistance, with students. They also explained how their uniform ribbons and insignia are earned. Two of the visiting soldiers, SFC David Stover and SFC Ryan McCaffrey, have been designated the top two Drill Sergeants in the Army. |
Coventry K-Kids Give BackPosted on: Friday, December 13, 2013Coventry Elementary School (CES) K-Kids made cookies for the annual Airmen's cookie drive at Langley AFB. K-Kids also presented a check to Bill Jurgens from the Kiwanis Club for $259.49. Students raised this money through their UNICEF Trick or Treat Drive. K-Kids is a service organization for elementary schools sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. |
Support to the Troops from GBESPosted on: Friday, December 13, 2013Mrs. Williamson's third grade class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) organized a collection of holiday items that were shipped to the Support to the Troops organization for distribution to troops who are deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and other combat zones. Students were assisted in the shipment by a generous donation from the Grafton Kiwanis Club. The donation was used to ship the seven boxes to the Support to the Troops headquarters in Connecticut. |
GHS Students Finalists in Lexus Eco ChallengePosted on: Friday, December 13, 2013Grafton High School’s Phineas and Ferns team was selected as one of the finalists in this year’s Lexus Eco Challenge. The team was one of only 16 winners in the “Air and Climate” challenge and was the only winning team from Virginia. The Lexus Eco Challenge is a nationwide educational program and contest that inspires and empowers young people to learn about the environment and take action to improve it. Lexus will award a total of $500,000 in grants and scholarships throughout this year’s program. Steven Meade, team sponsor and AP Environmental Science teacher at Grafton High School (GHS), won a $1,000 grant to buy lab equipment. The school will receive $2,000, and each team member won $1,400 in scholarship money. |
Legislative VisitPosted on: Friday, December 06, 2013Local state legislators headed back to school this week. Senator John Miller, Delegate Brenda Pogge and Delegate-Elect Monty Mason spent a morning visiting classrooms and talking to students and teachers at Magruder Elementary School (MES) as part of a statewide initiative to encourage elected officials to visit at least one school in their district each year. “Take Your Legislator to School” Month is coordinated annually by the Virginia School Board Association and the Governor. |
YCSD National Board Certified TeachersPosted on: Friday, December 06, 2013Six York County School Division (YCSD) teachers recently achieved National Board Certification. The National Board Certification process is a rigorous, voluntary endeavor, in which teachers demonstrate accomplished teaching via an extensive written portfolio (including student work, videotapes, analysis and reflection), as well as performance on six content-specific assessment exercises. YCSD teachers who have been designated National Board Certified Teachers for 2013 are: Heather Stark, Queens Lake Middle School; Annyce True, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Desiree Lawson, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Kimberly Clore, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Karolyn Blackburn, Grafton Bethel Elementary School; Lindsey Cagle, Yorktown Elementary School. |
