YMS Geographic Bee Winner

Posted On: Friday, January 24, 2014

Suparnamaaya Prasad, an eighth grade student at Yorktown Middle School (YMS), won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Second place went to seventh grader Logan Coker, and third place was secured by eighth grader Marley Keefer.

The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 26th Annual National Geographic Bee. School-level winners, including Prasad, will now take a written test to qualify for the state Bee to be held April 4, 2014. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the national competition in May. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society.

Everyone can test their geography knowledge with the new and exciting GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, which poses 10 new questions a day, or by downloading the “National Geographic GeoBee Challenge” application.

The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. Its mission is to inspire people to care about the planet. Founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” the Society works to inspire people to care about the planet. National Geographic has funded more than 10,000 scientific research projects and supports education programs combating geographic illiteracy.
