Wonder Writing

Students in Sandy Cherry's fifth grade class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) have been reading Wonder, by R. J. Palacio, which tells of a twelve-year-old boy with a facial deformity. After watching a video from the Craniofacial Association showing children participating in an annual retreat, GBES students wanted to take action. They chose to write friendly letters to the next group of children who will attend the retreat. This was a perfect addition to the school’s Anti-Bullying activities.


YMS Geographic Bee Winner

Suparnamaaya Prasad, an eighth grade student at Yorktown Middle School (YMS), won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Second place went to seventh grader Logan Coker, and third place was secured by eighth grader Marley Keefer. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 26th Annual National Geographic Bee. School-level winners, including Prasad, will now take a written test to qualify for the state Bee to be held April 4, 2014. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the national competition in May.


Beautifying with Bulbs

Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) students in Mrs. Bauer's and Mrs. McKisson's fourth grade classes planted hundreds of bulbs, donated to GBES by Brent and Becky's Bulbs in Gloucester, Virginia. The students are looking forward to a burst of spring color to transform the space where cedar trees used to grow.


QLMS Students Selected for District Chorus & Band

Sophie Lake and Ryann Elliott, students at Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS), were recently selected for the 2014 District VIII Chorus. Five QLMS students were also recently selected for the 2014 District VIII Band. Congratulations to: John Morrow (1st Chair, Trumpet), Isaiah Payne (3rd Chair, Snare Drum), Emily Slack (7th Chair, French Horn), Kellie Smith (6th Chair, Flute), and Chloe Keller (8th Chair, Clarinet).


York County School Division Adjusted Calendar

Due to the weather-related school closings that took place this week, the York County School Division has adjusted the school calendars for January in order to complete exams for high school courses. Information regarding makeup days will be provided once those decisions have been made.


Board Builder Training Session

Grafton Middle School’s Chelsei Fox will be demonstrating how she uses Discovery Education Board Builder with her students during a live webcast at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21. She will also show some examples of boards and digital content her students have created.


Emergency Preparedness

York County School Division (YCSD) principals and administrators took part in tabletop drills with local emergency officials this week. Participants were provided emergency scenarios for which they had to devise courses of action to ensure student and staff safety. The professional development exercise is part of the ongoing Emergency Preparation partnership between the YCSD, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, and Fire & Life Safety. The public agencies also work with division staff during emergency drills held at the schools with students and staff.


Middle School Students Off to Mars!

Sixth grade science teachers, Tabbi Brownschidle (Yorktown Middle School) and Chelsei Fox (Grafton Middle School), were awarded a $5,000 Student Achievement Grant from the NEA Foundation for their Mars Colony Project. Students from both schools will collaborate as they design 22 modules, that when combined, would emulate the proposed Mars One settlement, which plans to take private citizens on a one-way trip to Mars in 2023. In this project, student teams will address food and air supply, energy production, water and sewage, resource acquisition, and recycling. This project requires students to not only master the science content, but also develops their skills in research, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication.


YHS All District Band Honors

Congratulations to the York High School (YHS) students selected for the 2014 All District Band. Symphonic Band selectees include: Cailin Chaloux (Piccolo - 1st Chair); Matthew Shih (Flute - 6th Chair); Christopher Dollesin (Alto Sax - 1st Chair); Ethan Buck (Trombone - 1st Chair); and David Brewster (Tuba - 1st Chair). Concert Band selectees include: Kevin Babu (Clarinet - 12th Chair); Bennett Keene (Bass Clarinet - 2nd Chair); and Elliott Miller (Alto Sax - 1st Chair). Cailin Chaloux, Christopher Dollesin, Ethan Buck and David Brewster also qualified to audition for the All Virginia Band.


GHS Student Actors Qualify for National Competition

Six Grafton High School (GHS) students have qualified to compete at the International Thespian Festival to be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in June! They each received an “Accomplished” rating at the state level. The GHS students earning the opportunity to compete in June are: Kylie Kraft for Stage Management; Anita Brown for Costume Design; Steven Clifton and Michael McGinnis for Duet Acting; Savannah Sanchez for Monologue; Karese Kaw-uh for Solo Musical. In addition, Savannah Sanchez, Michael McGinnis and Steven Clifton received the Critic’s Choice Award for being the judge’s favorites and were invited to perform on the Main Stage for the entire national conference! Only students from three schools in Virginia were invited to perform a Main Stage Show.
