GSST Team Selected as Finalist in NASA ChallengePosted on: Friday, March 28, 2014Congratulations to the Governor’s School for Science and Technology! The GSST Team, which includes three York County School Division students, has been selected as one of the top five finalists in the NASA Exploration Design Challenge (EDC)! The goal of the Exploration Design Challenge is for students to research and design ways to protect astronauts from space radiation. NASA and Lockheed Martin are developing the Orion spacecraft that will carry astronauts beyond low Earth orbit and on to an asteroid or Mars. Protecting astronauts from radiation on these distant travels is an important -- and very real -- problem that needs solving. |

YMS Student Headed to State CompetitionPosted on: Friday, March 28, 2014Suparnamaaya Prasad, an eighth grade student at Yorktown Middle School (YMS), is headed to the state level of the National Geographic Bee. As the winner of the school-level competition earlier this school year, Prasad took a written test to qualify for the state Bee to be held April 4, 2014. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the national competition in May. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society. |
STEM Students Take HonorsPosted on: Friday, March 28, 2014Members of the Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) after-school STEM Club have good reason to be proud. The students participated in a KidWind Competition in Virginia Beach earlier this month. The event challenged students to explore the development of wind energy by having them design and construct their own wind turbines. These handmade turbines were then tested for efficiency and power within a portable wind tunnel and judged accordingly. Students also had to have extensive background knowledge on wind energy to answer questions against a panel of judges. While the challenge was designated for middle school and high school teams, students in grades 4 and 5 were also allowed to participate. The MVES team placed 4th in a competition against middle school students. |
Heart-felt Gifts from GBES SCAPosted on: Friday, March 21, 2014Ryan Young, president of the Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) Student Council, delivered Valentines to residents at the York Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center on Valentine's Day on behalf of the SCA. Student Council representatives from each class in third through fifth grade made the cards in their February meeting. Residents were grateful for the kind gesture and appreciated the creative artwork and thoughtful messages. |
GBES SCA Supports St. Patrick's Day with "Sham" GramsPosted on: Friday, March 21, 2014Students at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) celebrated St. Patrick's Day and supported the SCA by purchasing "Sham" Grams - a shamrock sporting a lucky pencil and a special good luck wish for a friend. The SCA sold out of their stock of over 300 "Sham" grams. The profits will help fund future SCA projects. |
YMS SeaPerch Team Competes in Tidewater Regional SeaPerch CompetitionPosted on: Friday, March 21, 2014A team of four Yorktown Middle School (YMS) eighth graders earned a Third Place trophy in the Obstacle Course Challenge phase of the Tidewater Regional SeaPerch Competition held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Midtown Community Center in Newport News. Sponsored by Mr. Vince Hundley, Technology Education teacher, this was the first YMS team to participate in the competition. SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. Financial Literacy AwardPosted on: Friday, March 21, 2014Mrs. Gina Mancuso-Sidhu, Economics & Personal Finance teacher at Grafton High School (GHS) received the Grand Prize in PricewaterhouseCooper’s (PwC) Financial Literacy Award program. GHS received $5,000 that will be used toward the school’s Economics and Personal Finance program. PwC recognizes educators who are helping students develop responsible financial behaviors by prioritizing financial literacy curricula in our nation’s classrooms and connecting lessons to real-world application. Mrs. Mancuso-Sidhu submitted a three minute video that depicted her students working in groups and analyzing stocks to create a $500,000 diversified portfolio. |
Water’s Edge Volunteers Spruce Up the Grizzly GetawayPosted on: Friday, March 21, 2014Volunteers from Water's Edge Church spruced up the Grizzly Getaway Garden at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) in preparation for spring lessons. Volunteers were not deterred by snow, sleet, freezing rain or cold temperatures as they trimmed trees, pulled weeds and shaped hedges and bushes.
