GBES SCA Supports St. Patrick's Day with "Sham" Grams

Students at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) celebrated St. Patrick's Day and supported the SCA by purchasing "Sham" Grams - a shamrock sporting a lucky pencil and a special good luck wish for a friend. The SCA sold out of their stock of over 300 "Sham" grams. The profits will help fund future SCA projects.


YMS SeaPerch Team Competes in Tidewater Regional SeaPerch Competition

A team of four Yorktown Middle School (YMS) eighth graders earned a Third Place trophy in the Obstacle Course Challenge phase of the Tidewater Regional SeaPerch Competition held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Midtown Community Center in Newport News. Sponsored by Mr. Vince Hundley, Technology Education teacher, this was the first YMS team to participate in the competition. SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. Financial Literacy Award

Mrs. Gina Mancuso-Sidhu, Economics & Personal Finance teacher at Grafton High School (GHS) received the Grand Prize in PricewaterhouseCooper’s (PwC) Financial Literacy Award program. GHS received $5,000 that will be used toward the school’s Economics and Personal Finance program. PwC recognizes educators who are helping students develop responsible financial behaviors by prioritizing financial literacy curricula in our nation’s classrooms and connecting lessons to real-world application. Mrs. Mancuso-Sidhu submitted a three minute video that depicted her students working in groups and analyzing stocks to create a $500,000 diversified portfolio.


Water’s Edge Volunteers Spruce Up the Grizzly Getaway

Volunteers from Water's Edge Church spruced up the Grizzly Getaway Garden at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) in preparation for spring lessons. Volunteers were not deterred by snow, sleet, freezing rain or cold temperatures as they trimmed trees, pulled weeds and shaped hedges and bushes. The GBES Getaway Garden is now ready for the wonders of spring!


YCSD Students Excel at Regional Science Fair

On Saturday, March 15, more than eighty York County School Division (YCSD) students competed in the 63rd Annual Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair at Old Dominion University. Students presented their scientific research to industry professionals from across the region. The First Place Overall Grand Prize was awarded to Katherine Webb of Tabb High School (THS) for her mathematics project, titled “A New Statistical Measure of Effect Size: Rate Adjusted Standard Mean Difference.” Katherine will receive an all-expense paid trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California, May 11-16, 2014. Additionally, Noora Abdel-Fattah, also of THS, was awarded the First Award of Excellence for her behavioral science project.


SES Student Becomes YCSD’s First Future Chef Competition Winner

Ten finalists representing each of the York County School Division’s (YCSD) elementary schools competed in the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition on March 20. This was the first round of a national competition involving school systems from across the country. The primary goal of the contest is to get kids thinking about healthy eating by creating healthy recipes.


GMS Teacher Earns International Recognition

Congratulations to Chelsei Fox, sixth grade teacher at Grafton Middle School (GMS), on becoming one of fifteen Microsoft in Education’s (MIE) 2014 Global Forum Educator Award winners. Chelsei was recognized as Second runner-up in the Learning Beyond the Classroom Category for her Wild, Wild, Weather project at the Global Forum in Barcelona, Spain last week. As part of her transformative learning project, Chelsei’s students studied severe weather and created digital content on specific weather phenomenon using Discovery Education’s Board Builder platform. The MIE Global Forum recognizes and celebrates the achievements of educators who are preparing students for life in the 21st Century. Creating a Village - It Takes a GBES Class!

First graders in Mr. Miller's class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) created their own 3-D map after reading the story People, People, Everywhere! This project was part of the map unit. It was also used as a performance assessment for using and identifying map elements.


Waller Mill Newspaper Box for Literacy

Students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) participated in the Paint the Box … Read a Newspaper Literacy Campaign for the Virginia Gazette. Local schools, artists and organizations have taken old newspaper boxes and transformed them into works of art. The boxes are on display all around town at local businesses. This project supports the endeavors of Literacy for Life. The boxes will be used to raise money in an auction in April.


Navy Sailors Provide Nuclear Power Orientation

As part of YCSD's transformative learning initiatives, sailors from the local USN recruiting district visited Tabb High School's (THS) NNDCC/NJROTC unit and provided an orientation on nuclear power plant engineering as well as information on Navy recruitment. Two of the three sailors are nuclear power specialists, having served as nuclear engineers on numerous Navy Aircraft Carriers. The team is attached to Naval Recruiting District Richmond and operates from local offices.
