YMS Students Excel in World LanguagesPosted on: Friday, June 13, 2014Congratulations to the World Language students from Yorktown Middle School (YMS) who attained national recognition for their excellent performance on the 2014 National Spanish and French examinations. The exams give students of varying educational levels an opportunity to demonstrate their comprehension of these world languages as compared to students at similar educational levels. Nine YMS students earned medals in the competition, indicating they were in the top percentiles of students nationwide, with another 18 earning certificates of recognition for being in the top 50 percentile or above. |
YCSD Art Contest WinnersPosted on: Friday, June 13, 2014The York County School Division (YCSD) honored the Spring 2014 Student Art Contest winners during a reception on June 9. The contest is open to all YCSD students, with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Emma Lugo, a student at Mt. Vernon Elementary School, was awarded the elementary prize for her artwork, while Grafton Middle School student Zaria Edlow earned the secondary prize. Both pieces of artwork join a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. |
TMS Community Service DayPosted on: Friday, June 13, 2014On Wednesday, June 11, Tabb Middle School eighth graders participated in Community Service Day. Students volunteered at a variety of locations including York County School Division elementary schools, fire departments, Bethel Park, Bayside Convalescent Home, the York County Sports Complex, and the Bargain Box. While at their locations, students completed activities to give back to their community. |
York Retired Teacher’s Association ScholarshipsPosted on: Friday, June 06, 2014The York Retired Teacher’s Association (YRTA) recently awarded scholarships to two York High School (YHS) students. Hannah Hautz received a $500 college scholarship from the District B Retired Teachers. District B includes retired teachers from York, Gloucester, Poquoson, Newport News, Hampton, and Williamsburg. Hannah will be attending the University of Mary Washington in the fall. Madison Young is the recipient of a $1,400 college scholarship from the YRTA. Madison will be attending James Madison University in the fall. |
Saving the Bay is a Growing Project for Tabb High's Club EarthPosted on: Friday, June 06, 2014Students from Tabb High School's (THS) Club Earth planted aquatic grasses to help with the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem recovery. The club planted seeds, provided by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, in a contained environment at the school in February. They nurtured the aquatic plants until they were large enough to transplant at which time students Jennifer Melfie and Jack Gleisberg planted the grasses in the James River. Some of the aquatic plants were about three feet in length. |
QLMS OM Team Returns from World FinalsPosted on: Friday, June 06, 2014The Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) Odyssey of the Mind team placed 14th at the World Finals, held at Iowa State University at the end of May. Team members presented an original performance that included a pop-up style, not-so-haunted "house" where four special effects took place. Each team was scored for originality and engineering. |
Toad Abodes at GMSPosted on: Friday, June 06, 2014Grafton Middle School's (GMS) sculpture students are proud to show off their ceramic toad houses. Mrs. Layne's class learned about the importance of toads to our environment then sculpted toad houses out of clay. Toad houses should be placed in a shady spot on exposed dirt, as the toads like to burrow in the ground. Toads also love to hang out in cool places on hot summer days. |

American Mathematics Society Honorable Mention AwardPosted on: Friday, May 30, 2014Congratulations to Katie Webb, senior at Tabb High School (THS), for winning the American Mathematics Society Honorable Mention Award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California. Katie presented her project, titled, “A New Statistical Measure of Effect Size: Rate-Adjusted Standardized Mean Difference (RASMD)”. She competed against 1,700 students from across the globe. Special thanks to her teacher, Karen Mayeaux, for supporting her on the journey to this world competition. |
