THS Marching Band Success at Nationals

Congratulations to the Tabb High School (THS) Competition Marching Band for their success at the US Bands National Championship Competition held in Allentown, PA, on Sunday, November 11. The THS Band placed fourth in the nation for Class 2A, while placing first overall in Music Ensemble and second overall in Percussion. In addition, Tabb High School received the "Cadets Award of Excellence" presented to the band who demonstrated the highest level of achievement in the areas of creativity, student performance, and overall effect.


YRA Wears Pink for Anti-bullying

Students and staff at York River Academy (YRA) wore pink to support the school's weeklong anti-bullying campaign. Every day during the last week of October, the school community participated in activities to increase awareness and strengthen resolve that YRA is a bully-free zone.


Virginia DECA Day at Tabb High

Tabb High School DECA members celebrated Virginia DECA Day (November 12) with color beads. DECA is an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.


Mt. Vernon Elementary School Talent Show

Fifth grade students at Mt. Vernon Elementary School recently participated in the school’s annual talent show. Students performed piano solos, an accordion solo, songs, jump rope and dance acts for the show.


Seaford Elementary Walk-A-Thon

The Seaford Elementary School (SES) Walk-a-thon was a huge success, raising more than $24,000 for the SES PTA. Since the students met their goal, there was a special surprise for Principal Cristina Head and Assistant Principal Suzy Trench. They were both suspended in the air with duct tape.


BMES Canned Food Drive

As a part of the Red Ribbon Week activities, the Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) SCA sponsored a school-wide canned food drive to support the YMCA food bank during the Thanksgiving holiday. Students collected more than eight boxes of food, which will help support our local families. Way to go BMES!


Congressional Candidates Visit YHS

On Tuesday, October 21, a group of York High School (YHS) students met with Representative Rob Wittman, who represents Virginia's First US Congressional District. The group of students included those enrolled in AP Government, Virginia & US Government, and AP Human Geography. Joel Torres, a senior from Mr. Conrad's 4B AP Government class, initially contacted Mr. Wittman's office to request the visit. Rep. Wittman spoke briefly about his personal background and legislative priorities, followed by an hour-long question-and-answer session. The event concluded with a ‘#YHS Selfie" featuring Rep. Wittman and all the students and faculty present.


YCSD Teacher Presents at SURN

Bruton High School English teacher Blanqui Valledor was a featured speaker at the most recent School-University Research Network (SURN) Advisory Board meeting. Valledor spoke to SURN’s Visible Leading Program for English Language Arts which promotes learning experiences focused on student engagement in authentic writing, choice reading, and project based learning. Dr. Steven Staples, Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction, also shared remarks at the event.


YMS Field Hockey Raises $1,700 for the American Cancer Society

The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) field hockey team played its fifth annual Stick it to Cancer game on Tuesday, October 14. The YMS Falcons played the Walsingham Trojans and won the game 3-0. Both teams contributed to the fundraising effort, and their collaborative venture helped raise $1,700 to fight cancer. Over the past five years, the YMS Stick it to Cancer games have raised more than $7,000 in support of the American Cancer Society!


Things That Make You Squirm

Mrs. Mitchell, the music teacher at Seaford Elementary School, led second grade students in their musical “Squirm.” To prepare for the musical, the students researched bats and found that even though sometimes bats might make you "squirm," they are very helpful to us and an important part of our ecosystem.
