DES 2015 Reflections WinnersPosted on: Friday, November 20, 2015Dare Elementary School (DES) has announced the student winners in this year’s PTA Reflections competition, which had the theme “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Of the 13 submissions, five 1st place winners will go on to compete at the York County level, and then potentially the district, state, and national levels. |
WMES Harvest DancePosted on: Friday, November 20, 2015Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) has begun what they intend to hold as an annual school event now, a Harvest Dance. Students demonstrated dances they learned in their dance and music classes and invited their parents to join in some as well. They brought canned foods to donate and went home with lots of smiles and memories. |

Master teachers facilitate online courses for 10th grade students to learn more about NASA’s earth and airborne orbital and suborbital missions that are conducted or launched from Virginia’s Space Coast. |
Yorktown Middle French Students Meet French Pen PalsPosted on: Friday, November 13, 2015On Tuesday, October 20, Madame Kaufmann-Perry's French 1 and 2 students met their French pen pals from the French American School of Norfolk, Virginia. The native French students presented a PowerPoint to explain their perspective regarding the victory at Yorktown or Yorktown Day. YMS French 1 students introduced themselves in French. French 2 students did the same, but also asked two questions about the visitors, two about Yorktown Day, and one about a topic of their choice. Students selected a yearlong pen pal to exchange ‘slow’ mail letters, as well as communicate via a blog created by Monsieur Gregory, the French teacher of the French American School of Norfolk. BMES Recognizes Bethel Manor Fire DepartmentPosted on: Friday, November 13, 2015Members of Bethel Manor Elementary School's (BMES) fifth grade safety patrol team met with the Bethel Manor Fire Department to express our appreciation for all the help they provide our school and the Bethel Manor community. Classrooms throughout the school created wonderful posters, cards and letters expressing our appreciation. Three student representatives from the safety patrol thanked them for their service, keeping the neighborhood safe, teaching our students about fire safety, and assisting our school with fire and intruder drills. Other members of the safety patrol presented them with the posters and a small treat! |
Superintendent Named Darden FellowPosted on: Friday, November 13, 2015York County School Division Superintendent Victor Shandor, Ed.D., has been named a 2015 Darden College of Education Fellow at Old Dominion University. The Darden Fellows program honors one graduate each from the education college's various departments. Dr. Shandor was nominated by the department of Communication Disorders and Special Education. This year’s six honorees will be recognized at a luncheon in December. |

FIRST LEGO League Regional Qualifying Tournament was held at Crittenden Middle School in Newport News on November 7. Tabb Middle School’s Team, Tigers AI, placed first as Overall Division 2 Champions and will represent the region in the state tournament at James Madison University in December. |
WMES Storybook Pumpkin PatchPosted on: Friday, October 30, 2015Charlie Brown and Linus would have a great time looking for the Great Pumpkin in the Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) pumpkin patch. Students in all grades were invited to select a character from a book and create a pumpkin that looks like that character. They worked with their families and brought them from home to create the best pumpkin patch in York County! |
Anti-Bullying Month CelebrationPosted on: Friday, October 30, 2015Dare Elementary School (DES) ended a month of anti-bullying activities with a special Green Zone ceremony for the entire student body on Friday, October 30. The Green Zone is a school wide coaching program created by the National Center for the Prevention of Community Violence (NCPCV), a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing violence by providing community based resources for all ages. The Green Zone provides school-wide language for all to use when appropriate behaviors are being shown and when they are not. Principal Lindsey Caccavale introduced the school’s first Green Zone ambassadors, students who help mentor and support their fellow students. Students then planted red tulips in the front of the school for Anti-Bullying Awareness Month. |
