Superintendent Safety Message

I am asking for your help in addressing the critical issue of school safety. While this message may be lengthy, I think there is no topic deserving more time and attention. Over the last several weeks, school staff have responded to multiple instances of students bringing prohibited items to schools, making inappropriate and even threatening statements, and physical altercations between students on and off campus.


Bruton High School Student Competes in Triangle Hunter Derby

Riyah Hammarsten, sophomore at Bruton High School, competed in the $500 Triangle Hunter Derby in Raleigh, NC. She qualified in the top 12 and with a score of 148, she finished 5th, among amateurs and professionals.

Instructional Materials Review

The Instruction Department will hold a public review of the instructional materials recommended for adoption by the school division. These materials may include physical textbooks, eBooks, and any additional electronic resources. The purchasing of these materials will depend on funding. The public may review the materials on February 23-24 from 1-5 p.m. at the school board office. If you would like to participate, please email Sonja Zadel to schedule your time.


Advancing Computer Science Education Grant

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) recently named the York County School Division (YCSD) as a recipient of the Advancing Computer Science Education Grant. Beginning this school year, YCSD will partner with CodeVA to create a sustainable model of computer science professional development for teachers participating in cohort model training.

K-12 Innovation Grant

The York County School Division (YCSD) has been awarded the K-12 Innovation grant presented to us by the Virginia Department of Education. Through this grant, YCSD will partner with Virginia Peninsula Community College (formerly Thomas Nelson Community College) to offer a dual enrollment program that allows high school students to earn the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) remote pilots license and complete a career studies certificate prior to graduating high school. Students within the dual enrollment program will have opportunities to complete the newly developed Unmanned Aircraft Systems course through YCSD as well as the UMS 107: Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Remote Pilot Ground School through Virginia Peninsula Community College. Additionally, students enrolled within the dual enrollment program will have the unique opportunity to engage in a variety of work-based learning experiences to prepare them to meet the demands of this growing labor market.


Purple Star School List Grows

The Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact for Military Children has awarded 11 schools in the division with the 2022 Purple Star Designation, bringing the division total to 16. The Purple Star designation is valid for three years, at which time schools must reapply. For 2022, five schools (Mt. Vernon Elementary, Seaford Elementary, Queens Lake Middle, York High and York River Academy) earned the designation for the first time, while six others (Bethel Manor Elementary, Tabb Elementary, Waller Mill Elementary, Yorktown Elementary, Grafton Middle and Yorktown Middle) earned the designation for the second time.
