New BMES Principal Appointed

The York County School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David Reitz as the next principal of Bethel Manor Elementary School. The School Board approved the appointment after an extensive search process that included focus groups comprised of faculty, staff and parents, stakeholder surveys, and three rounds of interviews. Dr. Reitz is currently the principal of Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Suffolk, where he has served the last three years. He is also a past Teacher of the Year for Virginia Beach and Portsmouth school divisions; as well as the Assistant Principal of the Year for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, where he served two schools with a high military family presence. Big Winners Within YCSD

Congratulations to the 2016 York County School Division (YCSD) Employee Recognition Program recipients! The Superintendent’s Award recognizes employees who have made a particularly meaningful contribution to furthering the school division’s mission statement. Savina Booth, a Grafton High School special education para-educator, brings passion, creativity and commitment to her job each and every day. In addition to providing the traditional one-on-one support for students in her classroom, she researches, plans and creates solutions for these students to achieve what some may deem impossible. Greg Dolak, associate director of Maintenance and Facilities Support, was honored with the Spirit of Education Award. This award recognizes employees who have made a particularly meaningful contribution


SES First Grade Classes Host Writers' Celebration

The first grade classes at Seaford Elementary School (SES) hosted a Writers’ Celebration on Friday, April 29. The students shared their All About Animals research books with their classmates and parents. It was a big success!


Mt. Vernon Teacher Named VASC Science Teacher of the Year

More recognition for one of YCSD's finest! Tracy Buckley, a fifth grade teacher at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES), and the YCSD Elementary Level Teacher of the Year has been named this year's Virginia Air & Space Center Science Teacher of the Year. The program, co-sponsored with the Langley chapter of the AFA, recognizes classroom teachers for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies.


Yorktown Elementary School Magnet Night

More than 200 students and parents attended Yorktown Elementary School’s annual Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Night this month. Participants included the Virginia Institute for Marine Science (VIMS), Mad Science, physics experts from the College of William and Mary, and Bayport Credit Union. The organizations shared exhibits and activities designed for each grade level to increase understanding and enthusiasm in the fields of math, science, and technology, as well as improve critical thinking and collaboration skills. Students in second and third grades were tasked with Cookie Mining to remove all of the chocolate chips from a cookie without damaging them.


TMS Student Wins National Competition

Tabb Middle School (TMS) seventh grader, Abby Vedock-Gross, was the first place winner in the 2016 Young Reporters for the Environment USA (YRE) competition for the video category in the 13-15 age category. Abby is enrolled in the Extend program at TMS and completed this project as part of a human geography unit. Each student was challenged to research one of three topics: deforestation, water scarcity, or community health and to suggest sustainable change solutions in their chosen topic. YRE Young Reporters for the Environment is an international program that engages youth in environmental journalism in more than 25 countries around the world. First place winners in the national competition also proceeded to the international competition.


Student Art Contest

Local School Board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2016 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Regional Art Contest on April 12. Student art from the elementary, middle and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members. Art created by Ashraf Abdul-Alim from Grafton High School earned second place among the high school entries from Region II, which encompasses 16 school divisions. The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students.


WMES Plants Truffula Trees for Read Across America

The Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) resource team recently dressed up as truffula trees from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss for the Character Book Parade. Students dressed as characters from their favorite book and the Bruton High School band came to help celebrate Read Across America!


GBES Teacher Honored By State Organization

Carol Bauer, who teaches fourth grade at Grafton Bethel Elementary School, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Virginia Education Association (VEA) Award for Teaching Excellence. The award, the highest offered by the VEA, recognizes educators whose professional practice and advocacy for the profession are exemplary. Carol joined YCSD in 1996 and was named the Grafton Bethel Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2015. In addition to challenging her students on a daily basis, she serves as sponsor forthe Battle of Book and coach of the Great Grizzlies Lego team. She has helped mentor fellow teachers through the rigorous National Board Certification process. She’s also been part of the York Education Association at every level, serving as a local president, a member of the VEA Board


GMS 1,000 Book Challenge

Reading Specialist Heather Stark challenged the students and staff at Grafton Middle School (GMS) to read 1,000 books for Read Across America. GMS readily accepted the challenge and collectively exceeded their goal in just eight weeks. For every book read, students filled out a book form, which was then placed on the Cat in the Hat display in the school's atrium. Students could then track their progress over the weeks and be challenged to keep reading.
