Yorktown Middle School Student Wins County Essay Contest

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) seventh grader, Akira Durham, is the winner of York County’s “If I were County Administrator” essay contest sponsored by the York County Public Library this month. The contest, open to all York County middle school students, asked the question: "What would you do as County Administrator to keep York County a great place to live?” The submissions were then read and judged by York County Administrator Neil Morgan who selected Akira as the winner and recipient of a $50 Amazon gift card. In his essay, Akira wrote, “I would want to make our county as safe as it could possibly be, as clean as it could be and make York County very well educated to create an ideal environment for friendship, teamwork and communication, which will lead to a successful county that runs well.”


Honoring Service Members

Students and staff throughout the York County School Division have spent the month of April honoring our Armed Forces in recognition of the Month of the Military Child, celebrated every April. Students and staff divisionwide joined in the “Purple Up” campaign and wore purple on April 21. Waller Mill Elementary School also started the day by having a student play “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the morning announcements. Students at Bethel Manor Elementary School dressed up like their parents by wearing military gear. Yorktown Elementary School hosted a parade to honor military students and their families. Active duty and veteran parents joined their children in a parade through the halls of the school on Thursday, April 27. Students and staff members cheered to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of military-connected families. More than 300 students and their families were recognized during the parade.


Tabb Elementary School Celebrates 40 Years

Tabb Elementary School (TES) held a special event this week in honor of the school’s 40th anniversary. Student artwork lining the hallways celebrated popular concepts and items from the 70s, when the school opened, such as lava lamps, roller skates and disco balls. Artifacts from the school and popular culture from various decades were also on display in the school library and the event culminated with a program of student performances.


ACT-SO Competition

Fourteen YCSD high school students participated in the ACT-SO Local Competition in April. First place Gold winners include Amiah Brown-Drawing (BHS), Kyle McKnight- Painting (YHS), David Jackson- Poetry Performance (BHS), Cherelle Mathews-Drama (BHS), Sydney McGhee-Dance (GHS), and Alyssa Hernandez-Vocal Music (BHS). These students will participate in the national competition in Baltimore, Maryland in July.


Tabb Middle School SeaPerch Winners

The Tabb Middle School (TMS) SeaPerch teams had an award-winning weekend at the regional competition in April. The team of Jonah Hutchison, Andrew Zhou, Noah Simsic, and Daniel Khalil received 2nd place overall for having placed in 3 events: 2nd place in Obstacle Course, 3rd place in Finesse, and 1st place in Presentation. They have been invited to represent the region at the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia in May. Another TMS team with team members Mackenzie Brogran, Tanner Hart, and Aiden Turner received 3rd place overall.


YCSD Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship Winner

Rachel Brotherton, a BrutonHigh School senior, has been nameda 2017 Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship winner. More than 1,000 distinguished high school seniors won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations. Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage. Brothertonis considering a career in engineering and was awarded a scholarship from SRI International, a nonprofit research and development institute based in Silicon Valley, which sponsors scholarships to supports its mission of scientific discovery and knowledge.


YCSD Teacher of the Year Announced

We are pleased to announce that this year's Teacher of Year for the York County School Division is Tabb Middle School's Theresa Guthrie! Dr. Victor Shandor, along with Board member Jimmy Richardson, school division staff, TowneBank Vice-President Sandra Allen and York Foundation for Public Education board members surprised Guthrie with the news this week. The YCSD Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by TowneBank through the York Foundation for Public Education. The names of 19 school-level teachers of the year, along with the three finalists, are available on the division website.


Magruder Elementary School Career Cafe

Fifth graders at Magruder Elementary School have been signing up to spend their lunch with a working professional each Tuesday in February and March. Guest speakers from the fields of museum curation, photography, engineering and banking have visited the school. They share what classes and skills are important in preparing for their chosen career, some of their favorite parts of their respective careers, and answer student questions.


Yorktown Elementary School Visit to Mariners' Museum

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) third grade students visited the Mariners' Museum for a fun and engaging field trip! The students participated in "The Age of Exploration" program which discussed the different explorers, their contributions, where they sailed from, and what they found on their voyages. The students rotated throughout the museum to different stations where they interacted with maps, spices, and heard about life at sea.


Future Chefs Competition

Students from each elementary school in the division took over the kitchen at York High School on March 30 for the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. The national initiative, which is in its seventh year, was launched to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen. The cooking challenge began with hundreds of YCSD elementary students submitting healthy comfort food recipes. Ten students were then selected to participate in the division’s final event. With the help of cafeteria managers, the students prepared their recipes for a panel of judges that included School Board member Mark Medford, Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Chief Operations Officer Carl James.
