Yorktown Elementary School Family Dog Pawty

Yorktown Elementary School (YES) kindergarten, first, and second grade students and their families participated in a Dog Pawty in March. The event was hosted by the YES reading team. Participants enjoyed a hot dog dinner and then read their favorite books to certified therapy dogs. Families made homemade dog bones to donate to the SPCA and played dog-themed reading games during the event.


2017 Mt. Vernon Elementary School Spelling Bee

With the winning word “Honolulu”, fifth grade student Eric Nguyen became the winner of the Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) Annual Spelling Bee. Students participated in classroom competitions in February, and the classroom winner went on to compete in the school bee. Eric said that he spent over two hours every night studying the word list.


YCSD Students Advance to National Competition

Three York County School Division students earned first place honors at the state level of this year’s PTA Reflections program. The PTA Reflections contest is a national initiative founded in 1969 that encourages students to express themselves through the arts and be rewarded for their effort. The theme of this year’s contest was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” The following students’ submissions will move on to the national level of the competition: Clair Lineberry – 1st Place, Dance (Mt. Vernon Elementary School) Emma Reilly – 1st Place, Literature (York High School) Natasha Sauri – 1st Place, Photography (Bruton High School)


Strategic Plan Feedback Session

Earlier this school year, the York County School Division embarked on our long-term strategic plan development process. The initial phase of that development consisted of a series of community and staff focus group sessions to identify areas of instructional, operational and financial focus for the next five years. Through activities and an online survey, participants helped establish key themes and provided suggested objectives for the next strategic plan. The information collected during these sessions is now available on the FY18-22 Strategic Plan Timeline page of the division website. Division staff responsible for developing objectives to meet each of the strategic plans five overriding goals have used this extensive feedback to develop draft objectives for the new plan.


Tabb Middle School Band Director Serves as Guest Conductor

Tabb Middle School (TMS) Band Director Cami Van Rossum recently spent time supporting students from a neighboring division. The middle school band directors from Hampton City Schools (HCS) selected Van Rossum to be their guest conductor for their All-City Band. A representative from HCS shared that Mrs. Van Rossum was selected for this prestigious honor because she uses an energetic balance of fun and work to educate, entertain and develop students' artistic skills. She is respected by her colleagues for her ability to develop the individual skills of her students over the last 11 years at TMS.


Author Kim Norman Visits Coventry Elementary School

The Coventry Elementary School (CES) PTA sponsored an author visit by Kim Norman, author of I Know a Wee Piggy and 15 other children's books. Students learned tips for the writing process and were encouraged to have patience with their writing and persevere.


Bethel Manor Elementary Celebrates Reading and Writing

To celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Day, Courtney Brightbill's second grade class at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) made hats like the Cat in the Hat! Then, the students read Dr. Seuss books with buddies in the classroom. The students also started a new unit on persuasive writing. To help students prepare for this unit, students brought in collections of toys and other items from home. They set up the collections for viewing and selected their favorite. The students used this activity to learn how to share an opinion and provide supporting reasons in their writing lessons.


YCSD Transportation Department Honored

The York County School Division (YCSD) Transportation Department was recently named a recipient of a 2017 John T. Hanna Award, for excellence in employee safety training. The award is presented annually as part of the “Drive Safe Hampton Roads” program initiated by Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety organization. The YCSD Transportation Department was nominated under the category of Pupil Transportation Safety. This award is presented to those who encourage, educate, and promote safety in pupil transportation, making a safer ride for both drivers and riders.


Tabb Middle School Action for Animal Awareness Night

Tabb Middle School (TMS) sixth grade students have been busy researching critical issues facing animals and have worked in teams to design informative, persuasive display boards to bring awareness to the community. Students also solicited donations of animal care items and donated them to the local SPCA. The project culminates with approximately 300 students filling the halls of Tabb Middle at 7 p.m., Thursday March 16, to share their research and help make a difference in the lives of animals. Community members will vote for the most informative, passionate presentation and the winning team’s selected charity will receive all donations collected through a fundraising campaign.


Odyssey of the Mind Champions

Three York County School Division teams are headed to the state Odyssey of the Mind Tournament based on their impressive work at the regional competition this past weekend. In the Its Time Omer problem, the Yorktown Middle School team took first place in its division, while the Tabb High team took second place in its division and Queens Lake Middle School won the Odd-A-Bot problem in its division. All three teams advance to the state competition on April 1.
