York High Receives Educational Scholarship

Benjamin Bakkum, a York High School (YHS) senior in the IB Diploma Programme, is the recipient of the Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $10,000. Ben's essay was selected as the representative entry for the York County School Division and was later selected as the winner from entries submitted from all regions throughout Virginia. This essay represented Ben's dedication to historical and political research and analysis, and was developed under the direction of YHS instructor Paul Rice.


Sebastian to Coordinate William & Mary Grant

The York County School Division’s (YCSD) retiring Chief Academic Officer, Lucia Villa Sebastian, Ed.D., has been tapped to coordinate a Virginia Department of Education Title I grant at The College of William & Mary to assist local school divisions with schools struggling to meet annual student accountability measures. Sebastian’s retirement from YCSD is effective July 1, 2010. The over $473,000 in grant funds will direct work with local K-12 leadership teams in the central offices of 42 Virginia school divisions with one or more underperforming schools. Sebastian will supervise the work of leadership coaches assigned in each of the school divisions. York High School Chili Cookoff

The York High Leadership Class will be holding a chili cookoff on Saturday, May 15th from 12 – 3 p.m. at the York High School Cafeteria. $7 for a sampling of all chili and a drink; $2 for a bowl; Children 3 & under are free; 4 to 12 - $5. Baked goods for sale at the event. Entertainment includes Jazz Bear (band), Cakewalk, 50/50 raffle and activities for the children. Enjoy an afternoon of exquisite chili homecooked by local competitors. All proceeds benefit the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula.


Community Service Day

Tabb Middle School (TMS) is planning to demonstrate the importance of giving back to the community by sponsoring the first annual TMS Community Service Day for all 8th grade students during the morning of May 13. Students will sign-up to provide service to one of the following community locations: nursing/retirement center, selected YCSD elementary schools, the Bargain Box, Natasha House, Bethel Park and the Wythe Creek Farms Storm Drain Project. In preparation for the event, students are participating in essay and t-shirt design contests in their English classes. The essays will be shared with students the morning of the event and all participants will receive a t-shirt to wear while providing service in the community. TMS students are showing their pride in the community by giving back!


Lego Robotics Program Receives Funding

Tabb Middle School (TMS) has been awarded a $2500 grant from BAE Systems for the first Lego Robotics Program. Grant funding will be used to purchase materials to integrate into the classroom and for use by a TMS Competition Team. The Competition Team will be part of TMS’s various extracurricular activities for interested middle school students. Robotics training will be provided to interested YCSD teachers during an August in-service training. The teachers will learn how to incorporate robotics into instruction. The program is designed to promote a greater student interest in science and technology.


District Solo & Ensemble Festival

Queens Lake Middle School participated in the District VIII, Solo & Ensemble Festival held at Yorktown Middle School. Congratulations to the students who received Excellent & Superior ratings on the solo(s) they performed.


YCSD Playwrights Recognized

School of the Performing Arts (SOA) has been recognized as one of the top writing programs in the state. Out of eight winners, YCSD earned five slots. School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC) proudly announces the winners of the 21st annual competition for New Voices for the Theater, the nationally acclaimed statewide high school playwriting program that celebrates and cultivates young writing talent from across Virginia. One hundred and sixty plays from around the state were submitted this year and eight resident winners were chosen. The New Voices for the Theater playwriting competition provides an exciting opportunity for Virginia students to work closely with professional theater artists during a three-week residency.


Operation Green Sweep

Bruton High School’s (BHS) “Operation Green Sweep” was a great success. Over 75 students, parents, volunteers, teachers, administration and Kohl's employees showed up to beautify the grounds at BHS. Thank you to all that participated!


Future Business Leaders Win State

Congratulations to Grafton High School’s (GHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) for earning state recognition. Rand Irons was installed as the new Virginia State Vice-President to represent the Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Region. Additionally, the GHS chapter was awarded the honors of: 5th largest chapter in the state of Virginia, Honor Chapter (one of 2 in the TNCC region) and National Gold Seal Chapter. Honors awards are given for having a well-rounded balance of activities based on number of points earned. First place Virginia state winners will compete at the National FBLA Conference to be held at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee in July.


Skip a Meal for the Hungry

Tabb High School’s (THS) student activists group, sponsored by THS teacher Elizabeth Milne designated April 14 and 15 as "Skip a Meal for the Hungry" days. They encouraged students to donate money they might have otherwise spent on a meal to feed the hungry and save lives. The group collected over $350 for the two days.
