Tabb Middle Community Service Day

Tabb Middle School eighth grade students participated in the first annual Community Service Day. The students raked, caulked, painted, mowed, decorated, sealed, bagged, created, trimmed, hoisted, washed, hauled, planted, weeded, sorted and assembled; they also entertained, beautified, sang, assisted, played piano, chatted, shook hands, held hands, smiled and made human connections. The 264 students in matching t-shirts went to four nursing homes, three elementary schools, the York County School Division Bus Garage, Bethel Park, Bargain Box and visited a nearby neighborhood to paint storm drains.


Queens Lake Student Wins Art Competition

Natalie Doucette, a seventh grade student from Queens Lake Middle School was awarded first place in the State for her artwork. Her ink drawing won at the local, district and now at the state level in the Virginia Federation of Women's Club Art Competition.


Gold Given to Tabb High

Tabb High School eleventh grade student, Austin Pierce brought home the gold medal from this year's International Medusa Mythology Exam. Students in grades 6 - 12 are eligible to take the exam with five levels of awards. While the exam has a different theme every year, the format is always a multiple-choice format with 50 questions in English and students are allowed 40 minutes to complete the exam. This year's theme was "Olympians 2.0".


Student Donates Rain Barrel

Coventry Elementary third grade student, Haley Fowler took an ecology workshop with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. She assisted with building and then decorating a rain barrel to use in the Coventry Elementary Cougar Courtyard. The rain barrel will be used to maintain the Painted Lady Butterfly Garden and the Monarch Waystation gardens in the courtyard which are planted and maintained by Deardra Hanline's second grade class.


Sports Physicals

Sports physicals will be held at each of the high schools (GHS – 5/26 from 4-6pm; YHS – 6/2 from 4-6pm; THS – 6/8 from 3-5pm; BHS – 6/9 from 4-6pm). The cost is $15 and is limited to high school students ONLY, regardless of JV sport participation. Rising 9th graders are allowed to attend. Physical forms must have completed medical history and parental signature for the physician to see the student-athlete.


Technosphere Competition Results

Tabb Middle School's Technology Student Association (TSA) club competed at "Technosphere" in Fairfax, Virginia. This is a statewide competition for students competing at both the high school and middle school level. The events are highly competitive, requiring both detailed paper work and application in events such as web page design, boat design and building, dragster design and building, flight, hovercraft, leadership, technology bowl, technical writing and drawing, prepared speech, and many more.


"Hats Off to Avalon"

The Yorktown Middle School Classics Club sponsored a "Hats Off to Avalon" Day. Students paid $1.00 to purchase a sticker which allowed the student to wear the hat of their choice to school for the day. The Club raised $467 to donate to Avalon - A Center for Women and Children. The Classics Club, sponsored by Lynn Rickerson and Mary Gatens, is open to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls and promotes self-esteem to empower girls to avoid drugs, teen pregnancies and abusive relationships. The club members are also encouraged to support each other academically through peer tutoring.


Q and U Wedding

Tabb Elementary School students witnessed the joining of letters “Q” and “U” The two letters will be forever together spelling words such as quarter and quest. The ceremony is held to reinforce the “QU” connection.


Students Explore Life at the Border

Students at Yorktown Middle School (YMS) participated in a border exploration workshop delivered by students from the College of William and Mary. Conducted in Nancy Feigenbaum's Spanish I class, students engaged in decision-making scenarios of border life on the Mexico/United States border. The lesson was created in response to field studies of the border conducted by William and Mary students under the direction of Professor Jennifer Bickham Mendez. The experience enabled YMS students to increase their international awareness, enhance their English and Spanish vocabulary skills, and learn more about post-secondary educational opportunities.


Best Buy Teams Up with Kindergartners

Best Buy of Williamsburg's team of employees from the store partnered with Lowe's of Williamsburg to host an Earth Day garden planting with Magruder Elementary School's kindergarten classes. The event was planned by Best Buy's View Point Committee while Lowe's supplied flowers and seeds for the kindergarteners to plant.
