The Tabb High School Key Club sponsored its annual Red Cross Blood Drive with over 125 students and faculty supporting the drive to donate blood.

Flat Stanley Visits the White House

President Barack Obama gave Dare Elementary School (DES) student Samantha Wilson some assistance with her recent homework assignment with the Flat Stanley project. The Flat Stanley project is a literacy and letter-writing initiative based on the main character in the Flat Stanley book series by Jeff Brown. First grade students were asked to select a friend or family member anywhere in the world to serve as a “host family” for Flat Stanley. Samantha chose President Obama to host Flat Stanley because he travels so much. Samantha’s sister, Kalynne encouraged her to find a backup host family but Samantha refused and remained confident that the President would not let her down.


Adopt a Wild Thing in School

The Grafton High School Key Club raised approximately $750 for the Virginia Living Museum's "Adopt a Wild Thing in School" program. The students sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the morning for one week. The Key Club was awarded first place in the club category and is sponsoring the following animals: bald eagle, sea turtle, lionfish, vulture, and blue heron.


The Governor’s School for Science and Technology Recognizes YCSD Students

The Governor’s School for Science & Technology (GOV School) held its annual Awards & Recognition Ceremony at the Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton in May. The GOV School is a regional education center for 11th and 12th grade students interested in advanced classes in science and mathematics. As part of this specialized program, students have two years of research course work, prepare science fair projects and engage in mentorship experiences with local professionals including NASA, Jefferson Labs, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the College of William & Mary, Sentara Careplex and many others.


Outstanding Youth in York County

The Board of Supervisors and Youth Commission of York County have announced four high school students as outstanding youths in four categories. The students were nominated by citizens and selected by a committee. Each student received a $500 educational scholarship. The recipients are: Compassion - Sarah Williams of Grafton High School; Overall Achievement - Andrew Adderley, Tabb High School; Community Service - Stephen Dilts, York High School; Courage - Rico Gomez, York High School


Panther Cub Wins Best in Show

Clara Wincheski, fourth grade student at Magruder Elementary School, won Best in Show at the annual Magruder Student Art Show for her weaving entry. Clara's work will be framed and permanently displayed in the Panther Cub Art Gallery located at the school.


Coventry Elementary Prepared for SOL’s

The third, fourth and fifth grade students at Coventry Elementary School met for a pep rally to prepare for the Standards of Learning (SOL) test. During the rally they were given tips and strategies to help them do well on the tests.


Chili Cook Off Benefits the Food Bank

The Leadership Class at York High School put on a Chili Cook-Off, with all proceeds benefiting the Food Bank of the Virginia Peninsula. The student-run event raised $1,100 and featured nine competitors and five judges, including two professional chefs. The Chili Cook-Off presented a raffle, cake walk and bake sale to raise additional funds for the food bank. Winners: First place, Ron and Karen Gillingham. Second place, John Soles. People's choice, John Soles. Best booth decorations, Connie and Steve Hildreth.


YCSD Students Win at 2010 Prefaces Exhibition

Peninsula Fine Arts Center (PFAC) Director and Curator Michael Preble announced the winners of the 2010 Prefaces: High School Juried Exhibition. The pieces were selected by juror Mark St. John Erickson, Daily Press arts writer. Sponsored by The Tidewater Chapter of the Society Inc., this competitive exhibition offers students the opportunity to have their work selected for show in a professional gallery space with the work of their peers. Tabb High School (THS) student, Kelly Balogh took home the $300 best in show prize for her original acrylic painting, "Pucker Up". Second place of $200 was awarded Sydney Strader of THS for "Reaching for Light," an acrylic painting on canvas. Third place of $150 went to Shannon Kuster of York High School (YHS) for her acrylic painting, "My First Bath."
