Since record keeping was initiated in 2004, YCSD has saved over $2 million in energy costs and 95 billion BTUs of energy, which is equal to the annual energy usage of 2,784 homes. The environmental impact of our energy savings equates to permanently removing over 2,000 cars from the road or planting over 300,000 trees. An ENERGY STAR-qualified building must meet very strict energy, lighting and indoor air quality standards set by EPA. These buildings use less energy, are less expensive to operate, and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their counterparts. YHS 2011 National Merit SemifinalistsPosted on: Friday, October 08, 2010Each year, some 16,000 semifinalists are selected to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. The competition is based upon a student's performance on the PSAT test during their junior year. This year York High School has three semifinalists for the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They are Corrigan Blanchfield, Ke Cheng and Brian Xu. Grafton High School has one semifinalist, Tara Powell. In addition, GHS had four commended students in the competition as well. They are: Nicholas Grigorian, Eric Hansen, Maruchi Kim and Sora Ko. |
Baby Oysters Find a New HomePosted on: Friday, October 01, 2010Grafton Middle School Oyster Restoration Club has adopted 8,000 baby "spat" oysters. They will monitor the oysters for one year before being placed on a protected historic reef in the York River. |

FBLA National CompetitionPosted on: Friday, October 01, 2010Chris Whitmire, 2010 graduate from Grafton High School, entered the Accounting I competition for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter at Grafton High and placed 1st in the TNCC region, 1st in the State of Virginia and in the top 10% in the Nation. He received this honor at the FBLA National Competition held in July 2010 in Nashville, TN. |
Spirit flows to Homecoming WeekendPosted on: Friday, October 01, 2010Students at Tabb High School celebrate Homecoming with a week of spirit activities leading up to the weekend game and dance. Dressing up for nerd day, gender-bender day and big orange day helped increase spirit while the students decorated their class hallways for the Friday Pep Rally competition. The Junior Class won the hall competition with their rendition of Atlantis and the Sophomore Class followed in second place with their Savanna wall. |

Yorktown Goes to FrancePosted on: Friday, October 01, 2010A delegation of 13 York County citizens descended on the small Mediterranean village of Port-Vendres in southeastern France Sept. 14-19. The occasion marked the 20th anniversary of Yorktown and Port-Vendres' sister city relationship. The "twinning" is chartered by Sister Cities International. The group was welcomed as family with each member staying in a local home. They were treated to a series of receptions by the mayors of Port-Vend res and its neighboring village, Collioure. The agenda also included visits to local vineyards and historic sites, and a visit to the middle school, where Christine Hudson, French teacher at Tabb High School, worked with French counterparts to establish e-mail exchanges between our students and those of Port-Vendres.
