Author John Stephens Visits

On Monday, November 19, John Stephens, author of The Emerald Atlas and The Fire Chronicle visited with students at Tabb Middle School and Grafton Bethel Elementary School to share his experiences that led to creating his novels. Afterwards, Mr. Stephens signed copies of his book.


Seaford SCA Hosts Canned Food Drive

Seaford Elementary hosted their annual canned food drive reaching out to all students and staff to donate canned food. This year 1,927 items were collected and donated to the York County Food Bank.


Grafton High Students Placed 1st and 2nd at Stock Market Challenge

Grafton High School teams competed against 5 other schools and a total of 27 teams at the recent Virginia Stock Market Challenge. At the event, teams of four are issued $500,000 in mock trading dollars that they use to purchase fictitious stock prior to the opening bell. Once the event has begun, every 80 seconds is a new day on the stock-trading floor! There are 60 days of trading in total. Teams must track their stocks. They must then act accordingly, purchasing or selling stocks by attracting a "floor trader". The "traders" roam the room with hand held computers that automatically send teams orders via wireless transmissions instantly into the system. Trades are reflected immediately on the three large projection screens, which track stock prices, leading teams and graphical depictions

Seaford's Chrome club explored engineering. The students are working on building the tallest building using marshmallows and toothpicks.


Fourth Graders Support Our Veterans

Fourth graders at Grafton Bethel Elementary School showed their support for our Veterans by "hand-crafting" an American flag with their greetings. This flag will be sent to our troops through our "Support The Troops" collection spearheaded by our third graders.


Yorktown Middle School Citizens of the Month

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) recognizes students each month during the school year who have shown exemplary behavior or outstanding character for that month. Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as YMS Citizens of the Month for October: Darcy France, Andrew Jamerson, Daniel Hodges, Zion Rowe, Jarrett Medford, Matthew Nettleton, Jillian Honig, Cale Overstreet, Noah Beach, Tajalek Brown, Sincere Lyon, Caleb Taylor, and Johnny Turbeville.

Stock Market Game at Yorktown Elementary

There are more than 240 teams in the state of Virginia playing the Stock Market Game and Yorktown Elementary Math Science Technology Magnet School has two teams in the Top Ten. Mrs. Kirsten McLeod, Math Resource Teacher, reports that both teams are from Mrs. Reilly’s fourth grade classroom. The “game” gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line portfolio. Students work together in teams to select companies in which to invest, teaching them collaboration and financial skills.


Grafton High School Working to Fight Hunger

Grafton High School students are inviting the entire community to join their efforts to increase awareness of hunger and related issues with their Empty Bowls project. Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a small donation, guests choose one of the ceramic bowls to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. GHS’s Empty Bowls night will be held on December 13, 2012 from 2:30-6:30. All the proceeds will be donated to the Food Pantry of York/Poquoson County.
