YCSD Continues to Earn High Marks

Niche recently released its 2025 ratings for Best School Districts. Once again, YCSD ranks as the #1 school division in our area! We were also recognized as the Best Place to Teach and the District with the Best Teachers in Hampton Roads. This is also the second straight year we have been ranked #3 in the entire state.


Federal Impact Aid Survey

Each year, the federal government requires school divisions to survey every family to identify students who are federally connected. The information gathered through the confidential Impact Aid survey directly impacts the amount of funding YCSD receives. These funds are essential for providing teachers, support staff with textbooks, classroom computers, library books and other supplies and equipment needed to prepare every child for a successful future.


Bethel Manor Elementary Earns National Honor

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) as an Exemplary High-Performing School with a 2024 National Blue Ribbon award. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools for their overall excellence and progress toward closing achievement gaps.


Addressing Recent School Safety Concerns

This morning, Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Sheriff Ron Montgomery, along with members of their senior leadership teams, met to review several incidents involving rumors and threats of weapons or potential violence at our schools over the last several days. These threats, primarily spread through social media and text messages, have caused understandable concern in our community.

Commonwealth Conversations Invitation

This month, First Lady of Virginia Suzanne S. Youngkin and award-winning social psychologist, author, and researcher Dr. Jonathan Haidt will hold an online fireside chat to discuss Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation and how it informs our communities and schools in limiting social media and cell phone use among children.


Parent/Student Driver Education Presentation - 2024-25

Students enrolled in Driver Education in Virginia are required to attend a 90-minute presentation to obtain their Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-1) card. This is due to a 2022 Virginia General Assembly code requiring all approved public, private, and commercial driver training schools to add a 90-minute parent/student component to the classroom driver education curriculum.

YCSD Remains Consistently Above State Assessment Averages

According to data released by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) on August 20, the York County School Division (YCSD) continues to perform above state averages on annual state assessments from the 2023-24 school year. Overall, YCSD students exceeded state averages in all five Standards of Learning (SOL) content areas by between 11 to 15 percentage points.
