Title:   HVACR SUPERVISOR - ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Performs supervisory and skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment (including heat pumps, air-conditioners, boilers, freezers, ice machines, water coolers, pumps, vent and exhaust systems, sheet metal transitions, registers, ducts, computerized control systems, etc.) Provides training for supervised personnel and plans and schedules for all HVACR work. Responsibilities include the development of a preventative maintenance program and the scheduled inspection(s) of all HVACR equipment and systems. A distinguishing feature of this position is the critical nature of the work, which will require the individual to report to work during inclement and severe weather conditions. This individual must become an example of punctuality, time saving and maximum production standards and exhibit zero tolerance for absenteeism in the work place.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by vocational/technical training in the HVACR trade with at least 5 years experience as a Master Mechanic in residential, commercial and/or industrial HVACR work. At least 2 years experience in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide the acceptable knowledge, abilities and skills, as evidenced in the following performance responsibilities
Necessary and Special Qualifications:
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia vehicle operator’s license.
  • Registered by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Master HVACR Mechanic
  • Possess Type I, II and Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations, HAZMAT standards and comprehensive understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the BOCAI Mechanical Code and all other related and applicable codes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all methods, tools, testing/diagnostic meters and gauges and all other equipment used in HVACR installation, trouble-shooting and repair work.
  • Possession of adequate computer operational skills to include Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel and comprehensive understanding of the basic concepts of building automation systems.
  • Sufficient bodily strength, agility and dexterity to accomplish all physical tasks, specifically the ability to lift parts and equipment in excess of 50 pounds in weight.
  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills, specifically the ability to define, describe and make understandable any HVACR problem and subsequent solution(s) to supervisor and supervised personnel.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications, sketches/drawings and computerized control system data.
  • Ability to plan and estimate time and materials for all short and long-term repairs/replacement projects.
  • Ability to understand, explain and apply School Board Policies and Procedures.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Schedules, trains, assigns, supervises, and participates in all activities of the HVACR personnel.
  • Reports daily to the OB on job assignments, completions and all HVACR activity.
  • Works closely with the Maintenance Purchasing Agent to insure accuracy in parts/equipment ordering and the prompt delivery of same.
  • Maintains daily contact with Energy Management Specialist to install, monitor and maintain all energy management strategies, computerized controls and systems.
  • Develops a comprehensive and ongoing identification database to facilitate systems, equipment and control parts repair/replacement.
  • Maintains a daily log of all HVACR work assignments and accomplishments to insure an accurate history of man-hours and expenditures.
  • Monitors and logs all quick fix repairs to keep equipment and systems operational on a temporary basis and subsequently plans, organizes and coordinates long term repair/replacement for same.
  • Writes specifications for outside contractual HVACR new construction and renovation projects and monitors it with regard to quality control and code compliance.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates all long term in-house summer projects.
  • Works with related trades within the Maintenance Department to facilitate work order closure.
  • Manages the inventory of tools and ordered materials for all supervised personnel.
  • Works closely with PM personnel to insure that proper and scheduled filter changes are completed and lubrication schedules are met.
  • Calculates and makes adjustments on air balancing; performs necessary repairs to ducts for air balancing such as installing dampers, insulating ducts and adding supply or return registers.
  • Evaluates and reports results to OB on the efficiency and production of supervised personnel.
  • Works with School Division Environmental Safety Officer to effect an accident-free work environment, providing systematic and ongoing instructional opportunities for supervised personnel.

  • Can climb a ladder and lift up to 60 pounds from the ground and 35 pounds above the head.
  • Can stand for extended periods of time
  • Can understand and follow written and verbal instruction
  • Exhibits the manual dexterity and mental alertness needed to operate tool and/or other equipment

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee’s duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the OB in accordance with School Board Policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
