Title: HEAD CUSTODIAN - ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL

Primary Function:
This is a working supervisor position responsible for planning and coordinating custodial work necessary to maintain a clean, attractive and healthy environment in school buildings and campus grounds. The primary difference in this job class and the head custodian middle/high/multiple sites job class is in the level of responsibility required for maintaining larger and more frequently used school facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide the acceptable knowledge, skills, and abilities, as evidenced in the following essential job functions.
- ISSA CMI Advance Custodial Technician Certification and or industry equivalent is desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of commercial and institutional building cleaning materials, methods, and procedures.
- Familiar with the operating principals of and procedures for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, security intrusion systems, fire security systems, lighting, and firefighting equipment.
- Personal characteristics necessary to create and maintain an effective working relationship with subordinates, school staff and members of the public; logical decision-maker, honest, dependable, and trustworthy.
- Physical strength, agility and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including heavy lifting (50 pounds or more), stooping, keeling, bending and working from platforms, scaffolds, and ladders.
- Ability to effectively plan, coordinate and direct the work of others.
- Ability to work effectively under limited supervision; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to work out of doors in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions; ability to grasp, hold and manipulate tools and equipment used in a building maintenance environment
Performance Responsibilities:
- Serves as focal point for all custodial and building maintenance matters.
- Reviews maintenance requests initiated by school staff or other means and determines action needed to resolve them; enters work order requests in the maintenance work order database.
- Coordinates and supervises the duties of the custodial staff (listed on custodian job description) and perform tasks necessary to meet established standards for cleanliness, appearance and health in school buildings and grounds; performs supervision involving all aspects of maintaining behavior standards and duty performance.
- Maintains an inventory of assigned equipment; ensures security of school buildings and equipment; orders supplies, ensures accuracy of deliveries and verifies documents for payment; accepts deliveries and assist in unloading and placement of items in the school.
- Responds to security intrusion and fire warning system alarms and calls; Performs setup for all school events/activities and resets after completion.
- Reviews maintenance requests initiated by school staff or other means and determines actions needed to resolve them; performs minor maintenance on school building and furniture.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Can climb a ladder and lift up to 60 pounds from the ground and 35 pounds above the head.
- Can stand for extended periods of time.
- Can understand and follow written and verbal instruction.
- Exhibits the manual dexterity and mental alertness needed to operate tool and/or other equipment.
In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee’s duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.
Reports to:
Principal, Building Manager and Manager of Custodial Services
Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
