Title:   DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

The primary function of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction is to plan, develop, implement, and monitor the elementary and secondary instructional programs for the school division. This includes the planning, development, and production of curriculum materials, as well as the processes and best practices that are highly effective in improving student outcomes. This position supervises the instructional coordinators and coaches, leads the development of curriculum and assessments, designs and leads professional development, and prepares and monitors the instructional budget.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A postgraduate professional certificate with an endorsement in school administration and completion of those courses at the graduate level that are pertinent to the assignment.
  • Five years’ experience in public school administration preferred.
  • Have demonstrated, in a public school system, professional knowledge necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community.
  • Considerable knowledge of current changes and developments in curriculum, instruction and professional development.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of current techniques and procedures used in the design and development of curriculum.
  • Strong computer (Microsoft office) and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote projects; work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness 
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel 
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures

  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements 
  • Ability to provide leadership and to supervise the planning, development and establishment of new, modified and/or improved programs.
  • Ability to mentor and train new teachers, ability to hold high standards while also offering support and maintaining positive relationships.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership in the development of elementary and secondary curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Provide the leadership needed to meet or exceed performance on strategic plan goals and objectives related to instruction.
  • Monitor and provide support for School Improvement Plans.
  • Provide leadership in evaluating the effectiveness of academic programs.
  • Guide the creation, implementation, evaluation and improvement of curriculum as mandated by the legislature, school board, and needs assessment.
  • Plans for, monitors and evaluates the implementation of division-wide initiatives. 
  • Oversee elementary and secondary magnet programs.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of the sections of the budget that pertain to elementary and secondary curriculum, professional development special programs, and instructional materials.
  • Work collaboratively with instructional staff to design and implement a quality professional development program for staff.
  • Analyzes academic achievement data to understand the impact, develop goals and solutions grounded in data, and disaggregates data to understand root causes and lead improvements in outcomes for all students;
  • Monitors key metrics to determine the success of each academic area; promotes data-driven decision making across the division. Uses insights from student performance data across school division to inform continuous improvement of curriculum, instruction and assessments, incorporating input from school leaders, teachers and community members. 
  • Leads, coaches, and oversees the Instructional Coordinators to ensure the team provides exceptional leadership, service and support to school leaders and teachers;
  • Plan and organize regular meetings as needed with principals and assistant principals to coordinate a unified implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. 
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding curriculum and instruction.
  • Partner with members in other departments to ensure individual school support with meeting the needs of all students;
  • Model non-discriminatory behavior at all times and follow established safe work practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel.
