Title:   PARA-EDUCATOR - STUDENT SUPPORT

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Performs assigned duties related to the learning process by providing student behavioral support and reinforcement under the direction/supervision of the building administrator and Behavior Support Specialist.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or higher; or high school diploma or equivalent with additional 48 semester credit hours from accredited institutions; or high school diploma or equivalent in addition to passing a rigorous test as approved by VDOE or YCSD for purposes of determining highly qualified status for teacher assistants.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, school staff, and parents.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to perform a variety of routine and complex tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Basic knowledge and/or experience related to area of assignment.
  • Awareness of various characteristics of students with special needs.
  • Willingness to serve all students.
  • Ability to collect and effectively communicate student specific data both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstration of initiative and self-direction.
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity to perform all job related responsibilities.
  • Ability to move about in classrooms to monitor students with varied seating and desk organization patterns.
  • Ability to monitor and support expected student behavior in all academic and non-academic settings.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Perform assigned duties related to the learning process including implementing evidence-based practices.
  • Monitor and assist students under the direction/supervision of the building administrator.
  • Assist teachers in the maintenance and organization of a safe classroom.
  • Participate in professional development activities related to area of assignment.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to student records and information.
  • Collect, share and interpret data related to student behavior.
  • Follow established YCSD policies and procedures at all time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator.
Reports to:
Behavior Support Specialist
Terms of Employment:
Ten months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
