PARA-EDUCATOR - ENGLISH LEARNER (EL)
Primary Function
Supports the instructional program as directed by instructional coordinator supporting the EL program and administrators and/or teachers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates Degree or higher; or High school diploma or equivalent with additional 48 semester credit hours from accredited institutions; or High School Diploma or equivalent with addition of passing a rigorous test as approved by VDOE or YCSD for purposes of determining highly qualified status for teacher assistants under the No Child Left Behind legislation.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher qualifies for Tier Two.
- Considerable knowledge of English language and reading comprehension.
- Ability to work successfully with administrators, teachers, and school officials.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision while performing a variety of complex and routine tasks.
Performance Responsibilities
- Plans and delivers instructional EL lessons.
- Diagnoses oral English language use and receptive English language comprehension.
- Assignment will be determined to provide instructional support within the EL program. Assignments may need to change throughout the school year to maintain compliance with providing instructional support for students within each YCSD school EL program.
- Consults with classroom teachers, ESL teachers, ESL instructional coach, administrators and guidance counselors concerning individual student instructional plans and schedules.
- Participates in staff development activities related to area of assignment.
- Maintain confidentiality with regard to student records and information.
- Monitors students and performs bus, cafeteria, hall, or other non-instructional assignments under the direction of the building administrators.
- Assists the teacher in the maintenance of a safe, clean, and attractive classroom.
- Models non-discriminatory behavior at all times and follows established safe work practices.
- Follows established YCSD policies and procedures at all times.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Instructional Coordinator supporting EL and Building Administrators
Terms of Employment:
Ten months a year. Salary determined according to the YCSD Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
