Title:   LEADERSHIP TEAM/DEPARTMENT HEAD - MIDDLE SCHOOL

Position Type: Supplement

Primary Function:

Position is responsible under the direction of the principal for assisting with the development and mentoring of assigned teachers; providing staff development; identifying the instructional needs of teachers; serving as liaison between the department and administrators.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or a related field. Must have at least 3 years of successful teaching in field. Must be eligible for, or in possession or an appropriate Virginia teaching license.
  • Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, & the public
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Provides instructional leadership by facilitating and coaching the implementation of the curriculum within the department
  • Serves as a member of the instructional leadership team and attends meetings as scheduled by the principal
  • Facilitates department meetings and disseminates information/materials, present and analyze data, and foster collaboration among teachers
  • Assists regular, substitute, and student teachers with instructional needs
  • Supervises team planning within PLC meetings when appropriate
  • Provides assistance with the school improvement plan goals
  • Works with the school administrators and the director of counseling in developing the master schedule for their content area
  • Manages textbooks and instructional resources for the department
  • Ensures teachers complete emergency lesson plans and file them in designated location
  • Provides assistance to the assistant principals in coordinating coverage of classes in emergency situations
  • Work with bookkeeper and principal to purchase all materials/supply orders for department
  • Provides assistance with planning professional development activities and facilitating PD sessions
  • Provides leadership in the training and integration of technology as well as grade book software and Learning Management system
  • Collaborates with department members and administrators to resolve concerns
  • Observes and conferences with teachers as assigned by administrator to help formulate and monitor school-based plans of action for improvement of teacher performance as needed
  • Assist administrative team with pre-service events and activities
  • Ensures all required documentation and procedures are followed by teachers within the department
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional days may be contracted for specific job assignments. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
