Title:   STEM SCIENCE SPECIALIST (GRANT FUNDED)

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Responsible for providing leadership to support the implementation of all state and federal STEM career pathway focused grants to include the 2023 DoDEA STEM Environmental & Maritime Science Grant Program. Serves as STEM expert to effect staff professional development, classroom instruction and STEM enrichment experiences. Position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, and expanding YCSD STEM programs, Governor’s academies, and other related programs that support future ready graduates as outlined in the division’s Strategic Plan.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Virginia Teaching License in a STEM strand and shall have completed those courses at the graduate level that are pertinent to the assignment.
  • Minimum of three years of teaching in STEM fields required (science discipline preferred).
  • Administration endorsement required.
  • Coaching and leadership experience at division level required.
  • Experience with federal and/or local grant management preferred.
  • Experience leading high-quality professional development preferred.
  • Understanding of current practices in educational innovation and STEM career knowledge and skills.
  • Documented ability to prepare required written reports and work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Ability to lift and transport materials up to 50 lbs. due to the nature of science and STEM materials.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Possess working knowledge of best practices and current trends in STEM career pathways, innovation, and STEM and science instructional best practices.
  • Possess considerable knowledge of the principles and practices in meaningful STEM integration, STEM careers, and integration of student educational experiences to increase student engagement and achievement.
  • Possess working knowledge of Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE), environmental & watershed stewardship, and principles of maritime science.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the 17 Career Clusters and best practices for the implementation of Career Pathways within these Clusters.
  • Possess knowledge and experience in grant fiscal management and reporting.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate professional development, community partner meetings, division committees, and family engagement experiences.
  • Ability to analyze data and produce accurate and timely reports to include state and federal grant requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Establish effective professional working relationships with students, parents, staff, and grant partners.
  • Collaborate with higher education and community partners to develop STEM and science educational experiences and enrichment opportunities throughout the school year and summer timeframes.
  • Develop and support grant funded family engagement activities for military-connected families to include summer programs.
  • Support STEM innovation and career pathways implementation at all YCSD high schools.
  • Support computer science initiatives to include curricula integration, professional development, summer enrichment, and other related programs.
  • Collaborate with division staff to plan, develop, and implement strategies and activities to support students’ attainment of the Virginia Seal of STEM and Virginia Seal of Excellence in Science and the Environment.
  • Utilize the planning and implementation tools as established by the external grant evaluator in compliance with DoDEA and other grant regulations.
  • Supports the development and implementation of the YCSD Governor’s Academies.
  • Develop curricula to support the STEM and science career and grant content integration into existing curriculum including summer programs.
  • Utilize data to identify areas of growth and implement strategies to demonstrate improvement in student achievement.
  • Deliver high-quality professional development and coaching to support the goals of the DoDEA and other federal or state grant programs.
  • Support planning and development for implementation of high-quality enrichment opportunities for students to support STEM careers learning experiences such as work-based learning/internships.
  • Develop and implement a variety of activities to support STEM and computer science career exploration for elementary and middle school students to include summer programs.
  • Collaborate with division grant staff to ensure proper fiscal management and compliance with federal regulations and reporting.
  • Provides direct support to all YCSD teachers for the implementation of PLTW and environmental & maritime science courses.
  • Develop resources, professional development, and teacher coaching/support including summer programs.
  • Ensure chemical hygiene safety and STEM safety for all staff and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Reports to:
Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Grant funded through the 2027-28 academic year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
