Title:   LEGAL INTERN

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

The York County School division Legal Intern position provides the successful applicant with an opportunity to build valuable legal and professional skills in research, writing, and advocacy through exposure to different areas of education law, while providing valuable support to the legal department of the Division. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in education law, school policies, and regulations. The legal intern will work closely with the Division’s School Board Attorney, assisting in various legal matters, researching relevant case laws, drafting legal documents, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. This position will provide exposure to a wide range of legal issues in the education sector.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma and an interest in the legal field
  • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, Psychology, Political Science, or an Associates Degree in Legal Support Services such as Legal Assistant/Paralegal or related fields a plus
  • Strong academic achievement, excellent research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Knowledge or interest in education law and policy.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in legal research tools and Microsoft Office suite.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Conduct legal research on education laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Analyze and summarize statutes, regulations, and court decisions relevant to school district operations.
  • Assist in drafting legal documents, including contracts, policies, and memoranda.
  • Review and proofread legal documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing school district policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with the legal team in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
  • Assist in managing legal cases, including organizing case files, scheduling hearings, and preparing necessary documentation.
  • Attend legal proceedings, such as hearings and meetings, under the supervision of the School Board Attorney.
  • Communicate legal information clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Collaborate with various departments within the Division.

Terms of Employment:
Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
