Title:   DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Assumes responsibility for certain elements of the administration and operations of schools, including professional development and assumes responsibility for all elements of the athletic, alternative education, before and after school child care, compulsory attendance, food services, safety and security, student activities, student discipline, and health services programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate professional certificate with an endorsement in Student Services and shall have completed those courses at the graduate level that are pertinent to the assignment with a doctorate preferred; three years’ experience in administration with at least two years as principal or division-level leader.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Professional knowledge with the operation of a public school system necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community
  • Considerable knowledge of current changes and developments in modern Student Services
  • Demonstrated skills in managing the operations of schools and related efforts, such as athletics, alternative education, before and after school child care, crisis management, food services, safety and security, student activities, student discipline, summer school and health services programs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with Chief Academic Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, Instructional Directors, Operational Directors and Instructional Specialists
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to effectively supervise employees
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Directs the operation of school programs including athletic, alternative education, food services, safety and security, student activities, and health services programs and student activities and student discipline programs
  • Collaborates with the chief officers, other directors, building principals, and instructional specialists on school-based operational issues
  • Keeps the Chief Operations Officer informed of matters related to the administration and operations of schools
  • Coaches and provides support to principals on school operational and disciplinary matters
  • Directs the planning and administration of professional development in the areas of cultural competence, family engagement and school operations
  • Works cooperatively with the instructional directors for effective instructional programs and assists in interpreting the division’s instructional programs to the community, news media, and other interested parties
  • Utilizes data to identify operational professional development needs
  • Assists with the development of the annual school calendar.
  • Assists in the completion of Department of Education reports.
  • Assists with the planning and administration of summer school programs.
  • Assists in the development and coordination of budgets that pertain to Student Services
  • Supervises the health services program
  • Assists in the screening and assignment of administration and instructional personnel
  • Directs compliance with the compulsory attendance law.
  • Facilitates various committees including Anti-Bullying, School Attendance, Student Code of Conduct, and Community Engagement committees
  • Supervises the attendance and enrollment processes for all schools
  • Provides leadership for the management, revision and implementation of disciplinary procedures
  • Keeps abreast of educational development and provides leadership in bringing pertinent, innovative programs into the schools
  • Directs the creation, editing and revision of the Student Handbook and Conduct Code
  • Supervises all aspects of the food services program
  • Oversees the processing of court issued protective orders, community-based charges, and legal documents that impact student attendance and discipline
  • Collaborates with local law enforcement on student matters related to violations of Virginia code and school safety
  • Serves as a member of the division Title IX team as the alternative Title IX Coordinator
  • Coordinates Threat Assessment Processes and Procedures for the division oversight committee and school-based TAT teams
  • Directs the implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports at the division and school level
  • Oversees the development and submission of the Title IV Grant
  • Coordinates the Division-Level MTSS Leadership Team
  • Supervise the school social worker program and staff
  • Oversees high school graduation and commencement ceremonies in collaboration with building principals
  • Assists in the planning of budget items related to operating and equipping cafeterias.
  • Coordinates the development of Request for Proposals
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel
