Title:   MASTER HVAC TECHNICIAN - ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of HVAC systems in School Division buildings. Performs skilled HVAC work involving the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning systems and equipment. Develops preventative maintenance programs for all School Division buildings. Performs annual inspections of equipment and systems. Estimates time and materials needed for project completion and maintains an inventory of materials and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school, supplemented by vocational/technical training in refrigeration and heating trades, and 3 to 5 years of certified journey level experience in residential, commercial, and/or industrial air conditioning and heating work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Necessary and Special Qualifications:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Registered by Commonwealth of Virginia as a Master Mechanic.
  • Type I, Type II, and Universal Refrigerant Certifications.
  • (Applicant will be given a maximum of three months from date of employment to acquire the Type I, Type II, and Universal Refrigerant Certifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA standards and occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the common methods, tools, and equipment used in HVAC installation and repair work.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes.
  • Skill in performing highly skilled HVAC work.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, sketches, and drawings.
  • Ability to plan for and estimate time and materials needed for various projects
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Develops and implements preventative maintenance programs for heating and air conditioning units in School Division buildings including changing air filters, belts, lubricating motors and bearings, and making necessary adjustments.
  • Performs weekly inspections on air compressors and pneumatic systems.
  • Monitors computer controls to ensure employee comfort.
  • Responds to HVAC service problems; diagnoses and repairs problems.
  • Installs, programs and repairs energy management controls in all School Division buildings.
  • Maintains log of repairs, maintenance and inventory.
  • Performs annual cleaning and inspections on boilers and air conditioning systems, replacing or repairing parts, as appropriate.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs ice machines, water coolers, refrigerators, and freezers, vent and exhaust systems, pumps, etc.
  • Fabricates and installs sheet metal transitions and ducts; sizes and locates HVAC systems ducts and registers.
  • Calculates and makes adjustments in air balancing; performs necessary repairs to ducts for air balancing such as installing dampers, insulating ducts and adding supply or return registers.
  • Performs minor electrical work, as required. Performs general plumbing work such as unstopping drains, repairing faucets, soldering and brazing; performs general carpentry work including framing, installing shelving and replacing glass.
  • Moves offices furniture, files and cabinets, and performs other related work as required.
  • Must be available to respond to calls for service after normal working hours
  • Performs other related work as assigned
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Can climb a ladder and lift up to 60 pounds from the ground and 35 pounds above the head.
  • Can stand for extended periods of time
  • Can understand and follow written and verbal instruction
  • Exhibits the manual dexterity and mental alertness needed to operate tool and/or other equipment

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee’s duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
