Title:   SENIOR NETWORK SERVICES ENGINEER

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

The Senior Network Services Engineer will lead and implement cutting-edge network and cloud solutions for our school division. This role is responsible for designing, securing, and maintaining critical infrastructure, including cloud-based services like Office 365, high-speed wired and wireless networks, VoIP and digital intercom systems, firewalls, load balancers, and content filters. Further responsibilities include managing virtualized servers and multiple hypervisor environments, Storage Area Networks (SANs), Enterprise Authentication, email systems (Exchange, archiving), and system backups, monitoring, and inventory. The engineer will also spearhead new projects, provide technical guidance to staff, and ensure all systems adhere to strict data and information security best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related technical field; or two-year technical degree plus relevant experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide the acceptable knowledge, abilities and skills, as evidenced in the following performance responsibilities:
    • Experience in major systems development/deployment activities with two (2) or more years of intense experience as a technical/leader engineer, and/or network engineer in constructing and deploying robust enterprise-level solutions.
    • Experience in network and infrastructure design, implementation, and operations management.
    • Experience in supporting enterprise-wide network services and infrastructure.
    • Broad technical skills across multiple technologies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experienced with routers, switches, load balancers, firewalls and other associated network hardware.
  • Expert knowledge of current industry security standards.
  • Through understanding of Azure technologies.
  • Strong aptitude toward technologies is essential.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and well organized.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Able to quickly learn and use new tools in an independent fashion.
  • Experience with virtualized environments.
  • Comfortable supporting highly distributed systems without physical access.

  • Ability to stay abreast of and analyze advancements and trends in the information technology industry and to make recommendations for changes and improvements to systems and architecture when advisable.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, and reach when working with personal computer equipment, peripherals, and associated electronic network equipment and to lift fifty (50) pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to grasp, hold, and manipulate tools and computer parts.
  • Ability to climb a ladder while carrying twenty-five (25) pounds unassisted.
  • Visual acuity and perception required for operating a motor vehicle and working with computer hardware and software.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Manage the division's Security Information and Event Management system (SIEM)
  • Implement and manage the division’s Intrusion Detection System (IDS/IPS)
  • Perform security audits and remediations of network devices and configurations to ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices
  • Design and implement cybersecurity campaigns to mitigate against cyber-attacks through common vectors (Email, VoIP, etc.)
  • Manage the division's data backup and disaster recovery systems
  • Identify and solve complex network engineering and administration issues.
  • Provide leadership to Information Technology staff.
  • Identify potential solutions to resolve and prevent future service interruptions.
  • Lead technology initiatives, evaluations and implementations.
  • Experience with routers, switches, load balancers, firewalls and other associated network hardware.
  • Ensure that all systems are working at optimal levels and provide support to other Information Technology groups regarding new technologies and system requirements.
  • Provide expert assistance with and in some cases lead all phases of network engineering including definition, design, implementation, and testing.
  • Provide advice and guidance to Information Technology management on network and infrastructure technology development and best practices.
  • Provide expertise regarding the establishment of network security policies.
  • Ensure all installations are in accordance with industry best practices.
  • Provide coordination across technical teams to encourage application of standards and adherence to standards based on methodologies.
  • Tests and evaluates new software and hardware and assures all installations are in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
  • Installs networked servers, networks and associated networked peripheral equipment ensuring proper set-up.
  • Installs operating system and application software and associated upgrades.
  • Act as mentor and coach to key technical staff.
  • Provide 3rd level technical support to the Information Technology team and serve as a liaison to various division vendors.
  • Develop professional detailed system documentation to include operating instruction and guidelines, system reviews, recommendations, and technical diagrams.
  • Responsible for coordinating, administering and supporting activities related to infrastructure planning, data recovery and development, platform tools and related projects.
  • Provide network administration and network engineering services for specific sites as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Reports to:
Manager of Enterprise Support and Network Services
Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
