Title:   ROOFING TECHNICIAN - ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Perform inspections and surveys on all school owned buildings and perform skilled repairs to metal, E.P.D.M., hypolon, shingle, and tar & gravel type roofs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, and ten years experience in roofing to include metal, EPDM, and shingles (five years carpentry experience may be substituted); or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of standard practices, tools and terminology of the skilled trade of roofing.
  • General knowledge and understanding of building codes, fire codes, and OSHA requirements as required by the roofing trade.
  • Some formal training in inspections and repairs to an assortment of roofs.
  • Extensive knowledge in repair products and materials related to the roofing trade.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and drawings.
  • Ability to meet effectively with contractors, architects, and the public.
  • Ability to effectively work on a team and maintain good working relations with peers and supervisors.
  • Dependability with good judgment.
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of extreme temperatures and climate conditions including rain, sleet, and snow.
  • Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and from ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Must have current Virginia Driver’s License.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Perform a full range of roofing tasks including inspection, installation, repair, and maintenance of all roofs in school division.
  • Apply skilled roofing and carpentry techniques in repairing, constructing, and maintaining a variety of wooden and metal roof structures.
  • Perform surveys and report on roof conditions on a biannual schedule using drawings, sketches, blue prints, and own knowledge of roof construction
  • Develop inspection reports on surveys and keep history on all work performed.
  • Research warranty documentation to ensure all repairs conform to manufacturer specifications.
  • May be required to supervise and direct other employees on roofing projects as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Manager of Building Maintenance

  • Can climb a ladder and lift up to 60 pounds from the ground and 35 pounds above the head.
  • Can stand for extended periods of time
  • Can understand and follow written and verbal instruction
  • Exhibits the manual dexterity and mental alertness needed to operate tool and/or other equipment

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee’s duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
