Title: COORDINATOR OF SCHOOL COUNSELING

Primary Function:
Assume responsibility for providing leadership, alignment, coordination, and delivery in the development and improvement of the comprehensive K-12 school counseling program for the school division. The position ensures the school counseling program addresses the academic, career, and personal/social developmental needs of all students; provides meaningful professional development for implementation of the counseling program in alignment to the division strategic plan; ensures the effective utilization of staff and resources; supervises and mentors school counselors; provides assistance regarding graduation requirements; formulates and interprets policies and procedures and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Hold a Professional license with endorsement in School Counseling PreK-12
- Certification in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 (Preferred)
- Hold a Master’s Degree
- Five (5) years of school counseling experience required
- Possess high moral standards, professionalism, and integrity
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the American School Counselor Association’s mindsets and behaviors and the Virginia school counseling standards
- Specialize in individual, group, classroom, and crisis counseling
- Must possess excellent leadership, communication, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, staff, and stakeholders
Performance Responsibilities:
- Support school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, career and social/emotional development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society
- Supervise and coordinate a division-wide comprehensive school counseling program that is based on data-informed decision making, delivered to all students systematically
- Ensure developmentally appropriate curriculum is focused on the mindsets and behaviors all students need for postsecondary readiness and success
- Model cultural responsiveness and advocate for the equitable treatment of all students in the community
- Lead counseling efforts to close achievement and opportunity gaps, resulting in improved student achievement, attendance, and discipline
- Support and interpret the school division’s counseling mission, vision, and belief statements
- Develop short and long-term goals for the comprehensive school counseling program with an emphasis on K-12 alignment and articulation
- Visit schools and meet regularly with principals and counselors to ensure continuity in the counseling program, share immediate feedback on progress, and assist in the improvement of counselor performance
- Plan, lead, and evaluate professional learning communities (PLC) for elementary, middle, and high school counselors, and provide on-going counseling instructional support
- Build capacity in school counseling division leaders by offering additional growth opportunities
- Collect, analyze, and report outcome data related to the effectiveness of the school counseling program
- Provide direction in the selection of resource books and other counseling instructional materials and equipment for the counseling program
- Prepare and monitor the program’s budget
- Work collaboratively with the career coordinator, career coaches, and school counselors to align career connection exploration activities and experiences for students to the strategic goals of the division and state
- Prioritize mental health needs of our students and staff by working closely with school administration and the student services team to ensure wellness and social emotional learning strategies are made available
- Interpret educational information (ability and aptitude measures, standardized test scores, and other pertinent data) to students, parents, counselors, and other school division personnel
- Engage with community agencies and stakeholders, making appropriate referrals as necessary
- Lead crisis counseling efforts as needed
- Consult with counselors, teachers, parents, other stakeholders on issues related to student learning
- Handle issues which are highly sensitive and/or related to student safety in accordance with the American School Counselor Association’s Ethical Standards for School Counselors and School Board Policy
- Serve as a contributing member on division-level transdisciplinary teams
- Coordinate and facilitate the revision process for the Family Life Education Curriculum; ensure new hires are trained in the Family Life Curriculum
- Assist the human resources department with screening, interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for school counseling positions
- Coordinate division scholarships related to school counseling
- Maintain student confidentiality
- Assists with the development of school master schedules
- Work collaboratively with the Curriculum and Instruction team, and other departments, as assigned
- Represent the school division in educational initiatives at the local, regional, state, and national level
- Assist in organizing graduation diploma seals and items
- Serve as the YCSD contact for the College of William and Mary’s New Horizons Family Counseling Center, filing and tracking division referrals
- Perform related work as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer and Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Reports to:
Director of Elementary Instruction
Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel.
