Title:   MASTER SERVICE TECHNICIAN

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Performs highly skilled, master level mechanical and technical diagnostic work in the repair and maintenance of School Division vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses malfunctions in automotive equipment; removes and replaces worn or broken parts, and replaces fluids; enters maintenance data into computerized system. Supervises Vehicle Maintenance staff in the absence of the Manager of Vehicle Maintenance, providing customer assistance, maintaining administrative maintenance records, and assisting technicians in problem diagnostics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in automotive mechanics, ASE Master Certified Technician preferred, and 6 to 9 years of experience as an automotive mechanic; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Possession of Virginia State Inspection License.
  • Possession of current ASE Certifications in at least three applicable areas.
  • Certification for performing Air Conditioning services.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods, practices, and processes of repairing and overhauling automobiles, trucks, light trucks, and buses.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engine and chassis units.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety regulations of the automotive industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of state inspection rules.
  • Skill in using specialized, diagnostic test equipment.
  • Ability to train others to diagnose driveability problems and component failures for specific cause.
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity and oral and written communication skills required to perform all performance responsibilities, including ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Diagnoses problems, and major repairs to cars, light trucks, and buses; ensures dependability and safety of operation; repairs problems relating to fuel injection, gas and diesel engines, computerized engine controls, manual and automatic transmissions, clutches, cooling, suspension, steering, brakes (hydraulic and air), tracks, hydraulics, and attachments.
  • Independently diagnoses and makes repairs to equipment in the field.
  • Performs Virginia State Inspections.
  • Assumes duties of supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to cars, light trucks, and buses.
  • Enters maintenance data information into computerized system.
  • Attends training sessions and classes and attends meetings. Prepares and schedules required training for other technicians in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs to shop equipment; performs general shop maintenance and cleans shop.
  • Picks up and delivers vehicles for outside repair.
  • Responds to after-hours calls.
  • Make repairs on small engines (lawnmowers, weedeaters, chain saws, generators, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager of Vehicle Maintenance.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Can climb a ladder and lift up to 60 pounds from the ground and 35 pounds above the head.
  • Can stand for extended periods of time
  • Can understand and follow written and verbal instruction
  • Exhibits the manual dexterity and mental alertness needed to operate tool and/or other equipment

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee’s duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
