Title:   MASTER CARPENTER - ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL

Position Type: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:

Performs highly skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of School Division buildings, grounds and facilities. Performing general carpentry duties to include building walls, cabinets, countertops, etc. Plans and estimates time and materials for project completion; responsible for assisting in electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning repairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school, and 3 to 5 years journey level experience in construction or building maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the common terminology, tools, and practices of the carpentry trade.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of BOCA, NFPA, ADA, and OSHA standards and occupational hazards and safety precautions and procedures common to the skilled trades.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
  • Demonstrated skill in performing finished carpentry work.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and other drawings.
  • Ability to plan projects and to estimate time and materials required.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Depending on the assignment may schedule, assign, and supervise, as well as participates in the activities of carpenters involved in construction, repair and maintenance of School Division buildings and facilities.
  • Provides estimates of time and material needed for completion.
  • Performs general carpentry framing and trade work in the construction, renovation, repair or alteration of buildings, floors, roofs, skylights, vents, stairways, partitions, doors, windows and screens; builds or repairs partitions, shelving, cabinets, book cases, desk tops, countertops, etc.; plans and builds decks.
  • Repairs and builds walls including hanging, finishing and painting sheetrock; installs paneling, dropped ceilings and doors.
  • Installs flooring such as tile, ceramic tile, sheet goods, padding and carpeting.
  • Builds forms for concrete; pours and finishes concrete including exposed aggregate, smooth and broom finishes; plans, estimates and constructs brick and block structures.
  • Installs siding including aluminum and vinyl.
  • Builds and installs sign posts and guardrails; installs a variety of fences.
  • Assembles, refinishes, and repairs furniture.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on carpentry tools and shop equipment and within the buildings.
  • Assists other trade workers, as assigned, and performs other related work as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Manger of Building Maintenance.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Can climb a ladder and lift up to 60 pounds from the ground and 35 pounds above the head.
  • Can stand for extended periods of time
  • Can understand and follow written and verbal instruction
  • Exhibits the manual dexterity and mental alertness needed to operate tool and/or other equipment

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee’s duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
