Adolescent Sleep Patterns Research

In November, The York County School Division held a community information session on the Medical Aspects of Adolescent Sleep Patterns as part of the division's ongoing review of school start times in York County. The session featured guest speakers Darrel Drobnich, former Chief Program Officer of the National Sleep Foundation, and Dr. Robert Vorona, Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The session is being rebroadcast on YCSD-TV and can also be viewed on the division's YouTube channel.

Background Information   Educational Materials

Over the last several years, the School Board has held multiple discussions related to the emerging trends for later high school start times based on research and data associated with adolescent sleep patterns and the impact of school start times on student health, growth and achievement.

Earlier this year, we conducted a survey to determine the level of knowledge our community has on the topic and how we could best provide additional information to our stakeholders.

The York County School Board awarded a contract to the MidAmr Group to analyze current research and literature regarding the Medical Aspects of Adolescent Sleep Patterns.

Scope of Work

  • Case studies of other school districts approaches to adopting different start times
  • Analysis of the academic performance of public high schools that changed school start times within the past five years
  • Develop and provide educational materials regarding adolescent sleep patterns for posting on division website
  • Develop stakeholder information sessions
